World at work statement
Understanding and knowing about yourself
Three key skills of mine are team working, networking and oral communication, all of which are essential in wishing to pursue, accounting. One example of when I demonstrated these skills is during a cultural trip to Kerala with my Sixth-Form. As a group we had to raise over £20,000 to fund the trip. In order to achieve this, we hosted large events within the Sixth-Form and broke off into small teams to raise money. During the large events I worked effectively as a team member, completing my allocated tasks and helping other students with theirs. Within our smaller teams I took on both the role of leader and team member, helping to organise both small scale raffles raising around £300 each and supermarket bag-packing sessions, often raising over £1,500 each. Once we arrived in India our networking skills became very important. We had meeting with head teachers from both choice school and Thomas school. We successfully established partnerships with both and have since arranged subsequent visits. As a career in accounting requires all three, I have to develop these. To develop my interpersonal skills, I accepted a position at a local shop where is it vital to develop relationships with the customers and often act as an advisor. In addition to this I also had to quickly build bonds with my colleagues, something which will be essential in the world of business. As I am in charge of supervising a small number of customer assistants it as also helping me develop my leadership skills. To enhance my I.T. skills I have also enrolled myself on a Microsoft edX course specialising on the analysis and visualisation of data using excel. I believe the skills I develop from the course will invaluable for an accounting
