For decades it was up to local school districts to come up with standards, which were a set of expectations of what kids need to know and be able to do. Because these standards varied from state to state, a child that moves might either be way ahead of their new school or way behind. This showed that each state had different expectations for their students and this presented a problem when the No Child Left Behind law began holding states accountable for tests based on the different standards. Instead of improving student performance, tests were made to be easier and expectations were lowered. Each section begins with something called the Anchor Standards, which are standards that define what kids should know and be able to do to be successful in college and on the job. These standards correspond with the specific content standards. The content standards begin with the most fundamental of skills, reading: read closely, making logical inferences, citing specific textual evidence, and reading complex texts. Students need to be able to read tactical writing, historical and scientific writing, as well as literature and literary writing. It’s for this reason that there are two sets of reading standards across all grades; reading literature and reading informational text, such as essays, news articles, and historical documents. The responsibility of teaching all of this doesn’t fall on just English teachers, the standards call for literacy and writing to be taught across all instruction; History, Social Studies, Science, and technical subjects. Even though the Common Core Standards bring tasks to another level, all students, whether they are struggling or they are the top of the class, they are able to accomplish these standards. It’s just the means of getting there that may be different.
States are allowed to add 15% more content to the standards out of respect of state differences to make sure the standards ultimately reflect what local leadership in each state feels is best for their students.

The first most important behind the core standards in literacy and math is that they must be college and career ready. It must be true that once a student completes these standards in K-12, they are truly ready for college and a career. Many students who pass their high school courses and exams still face obstacles when they get to college and are not ready for the classes ahead. Because of this, many students become overwhelmed and don’t finish college. In today’s world, it is so important to get a college education in order to truly be ready for careers because as jobs change and develop, people need to have an understanding of the flexibility of their job and all the demands that go with it.
