Sadly, high school did not prepare students as well as a majority of them thought that it did. New college students are in need of some guidance and a push in the right direction; instead of a push in a direction that is not going to be needed. The freshman, and any other students that are struggling should be focusing on their mental health and organization from school and their life outside of school. Not being able to keep the two separate and organized could greatly affect a student’s mental health, and damage their school work. All Golden West College students should be required to take two semesters of learning how to do things that everyone should learn after they leave high school, such as: how to balance a checkbook, how to do taxes, what a mortgage is, and many more things that they will need to know in life.
Students are encouraged at a young age by parents and educators to plan well in advance for college and pressured to do great on a daily basis in school. Some high school students do not put forth enough effort to plan for college until their senior year. Some high school seniors think by making great grades they do not have to worry about getting into college, while others plan and prep as if it is the only thing that is important... ... middle of paper ... ...nfair to students who actively try to get into an accredited university or college who are thwarted in their goals by a simple thing as nerves and the ability to handle standardized testing in a stressful environment. If schools would compromise with one another and combine their efforts to improve the school systems, they could have a massive effect on students’ confidence and ability when testing for college entrance exams and their capacity to handle the work load that is expected of them once they reach college. We only get 24hrs in a day so that’s 168hrs in a week. You attend college full time which consist of 12-15 credits can go up to as much as 18 credits. At Nassau Community College a typical 3 credit course meets 2 days a week for an hour and fifteen minutes each day. If you take a course worth 4 credits that consist of having both lecture/lab section, then in addition to those 2 days you add on a third day. This third day all though only one credit extra may be 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Teens in the U.S. should adopt the British custom of taking a gap year between high school and college in order to gain perspective on personal values and career goals as well as gaining needed life experiences without the pressure and expectations of a school environment. A gap year is a time for students to become independent and learn a sense of responsibility before entering into university life. In the U.S.
The schools must have programs that helps students become more prepared for college and after graduation. These students must think independently, act more independently, and navigate the world more independently. The college must find ways to help students help motivate themselves. Be able to succeed in life releases stress. Works Cited Whelan, Christine B.
