Gathering myself with all my work, and all the grammatical errors that cross through each page; I realized that those were simple mistakes that everyone creates. Surely I am a victim to myself; I leave most of my work unreformed in its pitiful expression, and not willing to change it. Each essay typed out, and sent was an extension of me; When the essays were handed back I did not welcome them with open eyes. My report “Samhain Celtic Festival,” is misinformed about what I know about it, and what information I took to explain it. My summary for “Just One More Game…” is misinterpreted, and lacks true focus on what actually needs to be summarized. I value my education, but what I did not include was how I was going to keep it all together.
...lized that there were many mistakes that I needed to fix in order to perfect my writing. I need to consider more about focusing on the topic and organizing for my writing, because it appeals to the audience more clear to the point. Also, I feel that I am much better to convince my audience through my writings.
‘I am going to fail’ was the very first thought that crept into my mind on that very first day of class. Before I stepped into the classroom on the first day, I felt pretty good about my writing. I had done previously well in English, and didn’t think this class would be much of a challenge. This all changed on the first day of school, when my professor talked about the level of reading and writing expected for this class. I remember thinking ‘I don’t read, why couldn’t I have been born someone who likes to read?!’ Since this moment on the very first day of class, I have grown immensely through hard work. In this essay, I will explain what I have learned over the course of this class about myself, and about writing.
Legendary rapper Jay-Z has penned several love letters to his hometown of Brooklyn, crooning on “We Fly High” that, while “Manhattan keep on faking it, Brooklyn keep on taking it!”. The song is Jay’s tribute to his town’s trademark grit and toughness. He’s from a no-nonsense borough of blue collar workers and old-timers still upset by the loss of their beloved Dodgers. It’s a cosmopolitan borough marked by several sharp divides: rich and poor, black and white, young and old (although the residents are perhaps all united in their hatred of the Yankees).
This piece was included due to its nature of how important these games are to people from our area. This game would have been huge for Tom Brady and his fellow teammates on the patriots. The season was already stressful with edelman being out for the season making this last game just that much more interesting to watch and write about. When writing i came to the conclusion and learned that you aren't always going to win in the end everything comes to and end and you must learn from your mistakes. This writing means a lot to me and I'm sure it hits home with many other New Englanders since this is one game we all thought we would win. I enjoyed writing about the game because it was a chance to write from a neutral perspective instead of seeing
My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
Ten minutes is about the shortest play I ever seen my life. But each of these ten minutes plays told a whole story from beginning to end. This production I attended was call the Festival of Ten on February 28, 2017 at the fine Arts Center Mainstage. The production consisted of ten plays, each play was about 10 minutes long and all told a unique story. One play I found interesting was “Player of The Week” written by Pete Mergel, directed by Dalton Pitts, and Gail Argetsinger designed the costumes. This play took place in a penthouse in San Francisco at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel. “ Player of The Week” showed how losing a loved one can cause a huge impact on a person's life.
All the Way was written by Robert Schenkkan in 2012, and won a Tony Award in 2014. I am not surprised the play won a Tony, there is nothing but good reviews about performances. From what most can tell, the play is about the trials and tribulations of an accidental president. In some ways, that might be true, but in my opinion it is about so much more. All the Way follows the first term of Lyndon B. Johnson after an assassin’s bullet ends the life of, arguably, one of the United States most popular presidents in history (http://www.seattlerep.org/Plays/1415/AW/Synopsis ). Throughout the play, LBJ has to deal with the war in Vietnam, Civil Rights tensions coming to head, and most importantly the presidential election. But beyond the superficial themes, play reveals a fragile system full of flawed individuals deciding the fate of the United States, and depicts a complex, manipulative President Johnson.
My form and structure are not always the best. In one of our more challenging essays, the Rhetorical Analysis Essay my form and structure weren’t as strong as they should be. As stated before, I made the mistake of not staying focused on the rhetorical elements of my topic and venturing my own personal opinion in the essay, which crowded and weakened my form and structure. Continuing with Murray’s path, the development of my essays is based on the rubric. I always seek to include information that the rubric is essentially telling me to include, but sometimes I fall short of developing my thoughts enough. The dimension of my essays also has inconsistencies. I tend to have a problem of expanding into great detail on one point of my essay leaving another point barely expanded upon leaving my essay disproportionate. Finally, the last thing writer’s look for in their essay is their own voice. Thomas Osborne in Late Nights, Last Rites, and the Rain-Slick Road to Self Destruction states “I strive for a good grade, and will work as hard as possible to achieve one, but there is a voice in the back of my head that is effectively scoffing at the ridiculousness of some assignments and expectations that I have had to complete and live up to.” My voice sometimes gets lost in assigned essays when I try to fulfill certain standards that are put upon me. Thomas and I both struggle with writing what we need to write in order to achieve the grade
The transition between high school writing and college writing marked a difficult time for me. In high school, I never had the motivation required to develop my writing skills and writing essays was not my forte. I would express my jumbled thoughts on a paper and turn them in for a decent grade. Upon coming into English 1101 with this lax mindset, I immediately encountered many weaknesses in my writing, struggling with constructing an essay with a proper direction, style and grammar. As I began reviewing my problems, I started understanding these issues and eventually learned to improve upon them. From my portfolio, I hope to demonstrate my improvement upon these weaknesses in English 1101.
Fear radiated from me like the heat of the sun on the Sahara Desert. My fingers tapped and my leg shook. I had heard stories about the teacher. She was tough and she did not hesitate to give a student what he or she deserved. My first essay experience was a disaster. I tensed up and my mind clouded. I did not know how to write and in the pit of my stomach I knew my teacher would fail me. Anxiety imprisoned me. The day came for me to receive my graded essay back. Red marks covered the pages. I scanned my eyes over the words and began to lose vision to the tears welling up in my eyes. I followed the lines to the bottom of the page and stopped cold. I will never forget the last line on the page, “Great work!” I turned to my teacher and told her I did not understand. How could my essay be great work when it contained so many mistakes? She explained that the mistakes a writer makes does not define the writer. Just because I did not have the tools to write a proper essay did not mean I was incapable of doing great work. It was a simple phrase of only two words, but it gave me confidence, and a feeling of hope I had never had before. I sat a little taller in class that day. The teacher further explained that her job was to give us the right tools and if we used them writing would be a breeze. This was music to my rule-following ears. I work best when I have guidelines and instructions to follow. I
...e expectations are for a college level essay. Most of the students, including myself, typically despise writing because students are not properly taught how improve the right writing techniques. Students should still continue to use their critical thinking reading and writing skills because it will beneficial when they go to college or find jobs. With many different expectations from many college courses, students should try to master their critical reading skills because it will help them analyze and have a more in-depth understanding of the text. In order to improve their writing skills, students must get assistance from their professors, friends or the writing center. By reading aloud repetitively and spotting little mistakes, it will improve a student’s writing. In order to be successful in school and everyday life, students must use these necessary procedures.
The assignment for the book Wit was to analyze the social implications within the play. When I read the book, it did not make much sense to me the first time. But, after you gave us some breakdown, I immediately thought of writing a comparison between, Wit as characterized in the play and humility. I came up with this topic because that was my understanding and summary of the book. But when I started writing a few words on paper, I realized it was difficult understanding the assignment. I could talk about the story easily but did not know how to put it in writing. When I watched the film in class, and you continued with more analysis of the different characters as they relate to the play, I achieved a better clarity. Furthermore, during classes with the help of contributions from classmates, and your explanations, I started writing down key points about the book and the characters specifically.
I now have realized what a vital component editing is in my writing process, making sure to devote a lot of time into editing. English 102 has allowed me to become aware of my writing mistakes which has given me the opportunity to fix them. This semester I have become more of a conscious writer, I know my essays will never be perfect, but that doesn’t not mean I will give up the pursuit to further improve my
During the course of this semester; the variety of writing styles and essays assigned to me in my communication skills class encouraged the development of my writing skills, as well as provided me with more self-assurance in my abilities. My writing, research, and presentation abilities enhanced through practice, determination, and the understanding I gained during this course. With every single writing assignment, I learned new innovative approaches and skills, which enhanced my abilities to improve my thoughts logically, enabling me to write more clearly, and to organize my papers more effectively. At the beginning of this semester; despite the fact that I already knew the terminology MAP: message, audience, purpose; I never really understood the significance of MAP. For this reason, my writing lacked clarity, organization, and my writings appeared less focused on the topics. As a result my research papers and essays did not flow as smoothly from one passage to the next. Furthermore, I was unaccustomed with the precise procedures used when writing an essay. For instance, my previous classes before college, although requiring a reference page, did not require me to include proper citations in my writings. After evaluating the quality of my writing toward the end of the semester, I recognized vast improvements in several areas of my writing. By concentrating on the beginning stages of my writings, I could distinguish ahead of time my audience and my message. As a result, my essays are clear, and I remain on topic. In addition to that using transition phrases efficiently also helps my writing to flow smoothly. The proper use of transitions makes my writings easy to follow from one topic to the next. I also learned that pre-writing...
