Jan Karski did many things in his time. He started off just another person who cared about his future, then the Nazis invaded and it all changed. He became a general for the Polish army. Then he became a courier/spy for the Polish Underground. He did not physically save anyone but he alerted the world to these issues. For these reasons and more Jan Karski is truly a hero of the Holocaust. At first Jan Karski was just another kid who went to school. He was a good student overall. Jan Karski studied and got his degree in law and diplomacy. He also took and did his one year of mandatory military service. His career was looking very good. Then the invasion of the Nazis began (P.C.I.,2016). Jan Karski re-entered the military and became an officer. He got captured by the Soviets who were invading from the north. The Polish Underground took and bribed some ghetto workers for their suit. They gave this suit to Jan and made him a courier and also a spy at the same time. He was smuggled into the ghetto, Warsaw. He went on many missions like this (Kaufman, 2000). He finally got caught by the gestapo one time while he was traveling in between enemy lines. They took and tortured him very severely trying to get any information out of him. It got to the point that he feared that he would give them the information that he was working so hard to protect, so he slit his own wrists and was rushed to the medical department (P.C.I.,2016). Next thing he knew the Jews were beginning to be deported. He entered a house on the “so-called Aryan side of the Ghetto wall”. He met up with the people inside who were with the resistance inside of the ghetto and was given a blue Star of David to blend in.
