Infant attachment is the first relationship a child experiences and is crucial to the child’s survival (BOOK). A mother’s response to her child will yield either a secure bond or insecurity with the infant. Parents who respond “more sensitively and responsively to the child’s distress” establish a secure bond faster than “parents of insecure children”. Attachment theory is the idea that a child needs to form a close relationship with at least one primary caregiver. Toddlers are the epitome of curiosity and energy. From ages 1 – 3, toddlers are always on the go and want to learn about everything in their world. As with infants, no two are alike; each toddler is unique in his or her developmental stages, and each accomplishes milestones at different times. “Although children develop at different rates, there are common stages of development that serve as guidelines for what most children can do by a certain age” (Groark, McCarthy & Kirk, 2014). There are many things to look for in an infant/toddler program. Being able to understand the child’s needs is what makes a great program for an infant or toddler. The five most important components when looking for a program are: the safety for the children, the environment around the whole facility, the staff’s qualifications, the teacher to child ratio, and the program’s curriculum. Programs with staff that are caring is also very important to the young children. These are important because these components will help the child to become more independent and aware as he or she grows older in the program.
The child feels more desire to explore when the caregiver is around, and he or she is discontented when the caretaker goes away. This pattern of attachment is characterized by high discriminative aspects where the child highly sensitive to the presence of strangers (Newton, 2008). From birth to 12 months children are in the stage of Trust vs. Mistrust and the strength developed is Hope. Children at this stage need external (trusting the adults will provide for his/her needs) and internal (believing that he/she has the power of changes and to face events). To successful move to the next stage of autonomy the child needs to acquire a special bond, a sense of trust with adults called attachment. If this special bond is not provided children can’t develop empathy, an understanding of other’s feelings. Erikson had his theories on how to provide attachment:

Before learning about early childhood in this class I never realized all the way children at such a young age are developing. From the second part of this course I learned how much children are developing at the early childhood stage. I never realized children learn how about their emotions, having empathy, and self-concept at such a young age. I thought children had it easy. They play with friends, start school, and just be kids. One important thing that stood out to me in this chapter is that children’s self-esteem starts at this stage. According to Berk (2012), “self-esteem is the judgments we make about our own worth and the feelings associated with those judgments (p. 366)”. Before taking this course I already had a prior knowledge on infant and toddler development being a child development and family relations major. I have worked hands on with children in this age range and from previous courses know a lot about their physical growth and development. I knew that baby’s had poorly developed muscles in the beginning stages of life, but I didn’t know how long it took to get the muscles to develop. When holding a child we were always taught to support the neck and never let it just flop around. It was interesting to find out that even though a baby might be able to lift its head at one month its neck muscles are not fully developed until three months. By the time a child reaches two years of age their baby fat will start to disappear and be replaced by muscle from their constant movement like running and jumping.
There are many documented theories about early childhood development, contemporary research still concurs with some of these theories.
