Rhetoric about the ‘Mandatory military participation’ in a predominantly democratic country such as India is nothing new, given the widely-held belief that military participation is a euphemism for patriotism. Military participation be made compulsory for everyone in India has been a debatable topic. In my three paged essay I will present my view on this debatable topic. My source of information are from few websites, newspapers and discussion with my father, an ex-Indian AirForce officer. A democracy by definition does not support bondages and compulsions. Hence, for that matter any participation, including and not limiting to military participation, should not be made compulsory. I though strongly cater to the idea of encouraging the youth to participate in armed-force services but mandating the same is like questioning the democracy and freedom of the country. Mandating military participation will havea negative impact on the tender mind of the youth. If young people are forced to go into the armed forces against their will, it will only foster resentment against authority and will undermine any skills they might learn. Not every youth shares these qualities and interests. Military service is a very prestigious and highly-responsible job that requires the highest degree of skills, enthusiasm, and dedication. If we were to realize that a large chunk of this force is forced into their job and may not be as skilled as they are expected to, we would be apprehensive on national security and feel unsafe. There is also certain degree of possibility that if an individual is forced to military training he might abuse the knowledge against the common citizens. Some people are not cut out for a certain job and some are. It would be like making someone become a surgeon for 1 year against one’s will – Lord save the patients! They 'll do it as a job not as a passion and work done without passion hardly gives desired results. It would give rise to chaos and confusion among the youth and would result in a limbo. So military service made compulsory for youth would not only result in a nightmare for the youth but also for the society.
Compulsory military service propagates the military mentality and slows progress towards many other qualities such as international thinking. The military separates people from individualism making them believe they are a cog in the machine rather than a free, breathing, thinking human.
