Desire to Learn The world’s ability to prosper is directly affected by the people that inhabit it. Humans have always been curious. This curiosity has lead to some of the greatest discoveries in human history. Along with curiosity came the desire to learn, this desire to learn has led to the creation of schools. It is within these schools and other places of learning that the key to humanity thriving lies: in education and curiosity. First, I would like to state that education does not necessarily mean sitting in a class trying to stay awake during a lecture. Education can come from anywhere. Trade schools are a school focused towards a special education or vocation such as: aircraft mechanic, avionics technician, brick mason, and welder. These schools allow an individual who may not be able to afford tuition at a University or may be better working with there hands the ability to get a focused education. These schools offer the same benefits that a four year university does but with a different approach. Some can even be better in certain situations; some schools you are paid as you do the training and only take 12 months to complete. This provides better opportunities to those who may not have had them before. Starting with the obvious, the financial benefits to getting a higher education significantly outweigh the drawbacks, such as, according to a 2000 Census, “...data revealed that average annual earnings of individuals with a bachelor’s degree was from 74 to 87 percent higher (depending on age) than the earnings of individuals whose maximum educational attainment was a high school diploma,” (Hill, et al). This does not mean that someone who only earns there high school diploma cannot become rich or make more money than someone who goes onto higher education, but it does lend credibility to the fact that furthering your education is beneficial. This trend has become more apparent over the past years as well, as stated by Dr. Kent Hill, research professor of economics: “...full-time male workers between the ages of 35 and 44, the earnings differential between those having a bachelor’s degree and those with a high school diploma has risen from 38 percent in the 1980-84 period to 94 percent in 2000-03,” (Hill et al). This trend would indicate that there is an emerging “knowledge economy” (Hill et al). This means that as the number of jobs that require degrees go up, so will the importance of getting those degrees, which is beneficial because on average those jobs pay more.
