Long Beach City College hosts two annual dance ensembles every year. Theres one in the spring and one in the fall. I was lucky enough to attend the fall ensemble and luckily, I am able to say that this was one to remember. Not only was this my first ensemble as a college student, but I went in there with an extensive amount of knowledge that allowed me to critique the dance with ease. I was able to distinguish many factors of every piece that I enjoyed and didn’t like. Also, I was able to identify many different elements of each piece. Over the course of the ensemble, all the pieces were exceptional, but there were three in particular that stood out to me. Towards the beginning of the concert, The piece “Battle Scars” was one of my favorites of the night. It was choreographed by a student named Leanne Harris. It was an extremely emotional dance which really got to my feelings due to the fact that it was relatable. The overall message of the dance was about coming to terms with losing a loved one. In this case, this was loosing your partner in a battle field. This dance first started off by setting the scene. The …show more content…
This work compared to all the others varied in many different aspects. First of all, there were so many dancers. This piece had a total of 20 dancers. It was extremely ecstatic performance with its high energy dance moves and creative costumes. They chanted and paraded majority of the time dancing which got the audience feeling hyped up. The costumes were made up of grass skirts and colorful tops. The color scheme for the performance were hues of reds, yellows, and oranges. They had an excellent use of the stage. They jumped and kicked, moved their hips, and were also forming shapes within their dance. There was never a dull moment through this piece! Everything really did tie in together and I feel was an exceptional way to end the
The element that stood out the most to me was how effectively the music and the footwork corresponded. The best examples of this are seen through the dancers solos. Especially Albrecht's solo, his feet glide on the stage at the same tempo as the music. Similarly, Giselle's graceful footwork is truly amazing. I really like the similarities between the choreographed footwork and the music, it makes Giselle seem much more elegant and beautiful. This also seems to make the work look more put together and in sync because the dancers are dancing in harmony with the orchestra. The choreography by itself is amazing. The footwork is rapid and intricate, however, at the same time it is delicate and graceful. The ballerina (Giselle) made it look very easy to do the choreography, when it rea...
It is full of romance, chaos, and excitement, all at the same time. This piece also takes lots of skill to play because it is so unique. The piece also has broad appeal. It is different from most classical compositions, which makes it something that stands out to the audience, and makes it something that they will listen to. Another thing that this work is filled with is emotion, variety, and imagination.
The very first piece in the performance is one of the most interesting works of the concert. Bloom, the marimba quartet seemed to be blending in between post-rock and minimalism. It began with a four note motive which was a subtle introduction. I noticed constant repetition throughout the work. The members each had four mallets in which they introduced various thick textures. It sounded as if this piece had an overall joyful tone especially when all members played together...
The entire cast, and maybe even a few extras who snuck in, contributed to this final piece by lending their voices and dancing shoes. This was the third act of a Michael Bay movie in that it was a explosion of music and dancing that this show had not reached until this point. Tempo describes the speed at which the piece is moving. The tempo of this song starts fairly slow, but continually gains speed right up to the end of the song, and by way of that, end of the show. To match this accelerating tempo, the dancing and theatrics on stage increase in terms of amount of people and what they are doing as well. It sort of felt like when fans storm a field or court after their sports team wins a big game, except these fans can tap dance and sing. Another thing I loved about this song, as well as most of the show, is the timbre. Timbre is the quality of sound in the piece. This song had a glittering, warm, and jazzy timbre. Simply put, this is the kind of music that makes you feel good. Most of the show had this timbre, but this final song took that theme and expanded it as much as the auditorium would
... social dance. Many people in today’s society enjoy social; dancing. Chapter eleven dance concert, properly planning and establishing a dance concert is of the utmost importance. The partnership with the lighting designer usually takes priority over all other factors. One of the most important issues concerning customers has to do with mobility. The dancer must be able to move comfortably in the costume. The task of producing a dance concert is an overwhelming and tiring one. Chapter twelve dance in education and career in dance, many dance educators present the argument that teaching and learning dance as an art form is obviously absent from the American student education. There has always been and always will be people who have a love, desire, and passion to instruct and learn the art of dance, will ensure an important place for dance in higher education.
Miami Dade College’s very own dance majors, who were challenged by the artistry of guest choreographers as well as themselves, performed The Art of Dance. Watching this performance truthfully made me question if the dancers in this program were being trained properly to be professional dancers
This piece was a lovely piece it allowed me to be humorous and serious at the same time, I was able to show that I can work well with staging in the way I used the stage and my stage presence was seen, I was also able to show that I can play different characters from different genres and I also showed my skill of being able to do accents with this piece cause I was a coloured lady with an Afrikaans accent and I was able to maintain it throughout the piece I also showed that I am good in my characterisation skills because in my first piece I was more of an emotional person and in this one I’m more of a dominant rough character like the way I was making threats
The violins were plucking the stings and kept the beat. The video was awesome and had some war parts in it. The song was balanced and the instruments sounded like one instrument therefore they blended together. The audience seemed engaged because of the video in the background, they liked it a lot. The next band was Symphonic Orchestra and the first piece they played Dance of the Furies, from Orfeo by C.W. Gluck. The style of this piece was to the genre of the French opera. The piece started out very soft and gradually got louder very quickly. The fast sixteenth notes were in time. Also each instrument had a different part. The French horns played in time and kept the beat for a section of the song. The tone quality was equal. The intonation of the performers was awesome. The instruments blended together at some points. They also had great balance. The audience seemed to be engaged because of the great dynamic contrast. The next piece this band played was Variations on the theme by Tchaikovsky by A. Arensky. The style of this piece is Rococo. This piece starts out very soft. It had a happy and swift sound. The tone was very joyful and spring like. The instruments blended together and sounded like one instrument. They also balanced
When MacKenzie choreographs she focuses on delivering spectacularly rich performances. She has the ability to combine and create beautiful and engaging movement designs with an unusually effective understanding of concert dance architecture (Nevin, 2013). The audience is able to see the beauty each dance imposes. She is able to capture the audience with every dance and take them on a beautiful journey. She is also thoughtful in everything she does, but especially in anything that deals with any type of human connection, which is one of the many reasons why she is so successful as a teacher (Nevin, 2013). With her thoughtfulness and new ideas she is also open to learning and embracing new possibilities (Nevin, 2013). She is not just open t...
A sufficient reason for attending many NYCB performances, even of the same program when possible, is that one can never tell beforehand when the constituent elements of the ballet-going experience will jell effectively for them. For a non-musician like myself, it is difficult to “see" the music, but on Sunday afternoon it felt as if I did. Mozart’s and Tschaikovsky’s composition never sounded so sublime. Alexander Glazounov’s music was imbued with an irresistible beauty of its own. And the company was firing on all cylinders for this matinee! Maria Kowroski and Tyler Angle were deeply moving in Mozartiana; Teresa Reichlen and Russell Janzen, spectacular in Cortège Hongrois. All the subordinate parts, by Daniel Ulbricht in one work and Lauren King, Emilie Gerrity, Savannah Lowery and Ask la Cour in the other, were performed admirably. The work of the corps members shone throughout. This was easily the most satisfying of the five
The Shapes & Reflections 2016 dance concert consisted of well-put together dances from countless genres, most of which were Hip Hop, Modern, World, Tap, Ballet, and Contemporary. I was part of the show, so I received the chance of viewing the dances a multiple amount of times. After observing the show, the two dances I selected that stood out the most to me were “Danse De L’ Amour”, choreographed by Kim Gregg, and “Overload”, choreographed by Julio Velazquez.
The first part of the performance was a bit slow for me it was just normal tap dancing, but then it started to really pick up for me. It was like the performers found a way to combine contemporary dance, and tap dancing, and I really enjoyed this part. I could see the passion in the performers’ bodies and I believe they did a wonderful job displaying those emotions. Some of their movements were slow and gentle while others were rushed and powerful. The part with the skinny bald man in the turtleneck (a.k.a Mr.Turtleneck) was a bit awkward. I was really worried about Mr.Turtleneck when he fell on the ground. He was a very slender man and his fall sounded really bad, it sounded like he got the wind knocked out of him when he hit the
The fact that we can only be who we are and fight for what we believe in, carries over to generation to generation is truly amazing. Julia L Foulkes may not have known that when she wrote this piece that she definitely was recreating the future of modern dance as well as revisiting the beginning of paving the way for modern dance, yet she wrote the book and it had such vast impact on the culture. One that I hope everyone who inspires to be a dancer will have the chance to read one day, or maybe even to be. With that being said I hope you enjoyed my review and will be able to feel what I felt while reading the book and writing my review to know that I as a dancer grasp entirely where she was coming from first
This year was my 13th participation in the Solo Showcase Dance in the Grand Dance Party (GDP) of our Dance Club. As always, I challenged myself to a new performance. I was very lucky to invite Cindy, the best dancer in our club, to be my partner and it was the first time we danced together. We selected the dance, “Taiwan 3-Step”, a different kind of dance similar to Jitterbug for our performance. First, we had to compose the routine and the choreography. I went through many “Taiwan 3-Step” showcase dance videos and selected a few sections and added some of our own movements to compose of our routine and it would take many practices to finalize it. GDP was on Saturday, November 12, we started to practice the dance at the end of August and from
While watching the performance, I felt weird and somewhat bored with what they were doing. I think that was because I am not familiar with that style of dance, and it seemed abnormal to me. A couple of days after the performance, I thought about how dance does not always have to follow certain rules, and that dance is meant for someone to express themselves several ways. It reminded me that not everything I see or do will be something normal to me, and that I should learn and reflect from that experience. Looking ahead to my future, I see myself learning more about different styles of dance and appreciating the diversity within dance. Breaking free from structure and gracefulness is acceptable and should be encouraged with anything in
