Since as far back as I can recall, I have carried a deep desire to help those in need. Like most children, I would plead with my mom for some money anytime we passed a homeless person on the street . But I can distinctly remember the overwhelming feeling of sadness I would get in the pit of my stomach when I saw someone else in need. I couldn 't understand why some people in the world just seemed to have been forgotten about. Although I was young, and could not fathom the complexities of poverty, I did understand how uncomfortable it made me feel. This feeling I experienced as a child is the same one I experience to this day, only now I can see it for what it really is. I have seen people experience trauma, and I have experienced it myself. Most importantly, I have discovered that the old woman begging for money on the side of the road is just one small piece of the puzzle. This was just one of many disparities people were faced with. I have accepted and come to terms with the fact that our world and society are simply not designed for everyone. A great deal of our population has been left on the fringes, lacking the tools to access what they truly need. These realizations are what have motivated me to pursue a career in Social Work. Having to financially support myself during my undergraduate studies, I found it difficult to find time to both volunteer and complete my school work. However, I was elated to learn that the school I was attending offered an amazing opportunity for students to volunteer during their spring break. I immediately took advantage of this opportunity since my schedule would finally allow for me to do some service work. I chose to work with Habitat for Humanity for the week. Having to work full time, my schedule is going to be very tight. However, I am certain that continuing my career with RUPCO, forming connections, and providing case management will complement my education and learning experience. I will be honest in stating that I am not entirely sure which specific line of social work I would like to be involved in once I graduate, since there is so much I am passionate about. I am sure that in time I will develop a more specific interest in a certain area, but all of our societal issues go hand in hand, so I would be honored to work amongst many types of
