I attended a PTA meeting in October to observe the fundamentals of the school’s community and collaboration amongst teachers and parents. The school’s community is warm and inviting to all that want to participate in a child’s life. The teachers were friendly and welcomed everyone respectfully. The classrooms are colorful and arranged to best suit the students. The classrooms are full of the students’ work and achievements. The bulletin boards display successful progress for the month and usually have a theme to go along with them. The hallways are also decorated with students’ work and encouraging words to uplift those that roam the halls. The president also enforced that with parent involvement, a child’s success can increase rapidly in the classroom. When a child knows someone cares for their achievement it is all they need in order to do well in the classroom. Parents also influence the amount of donation money the school receives throughout the year when it comes to school functions and fundraisers. During the PTA meeting, parents did ask a few questions and voice some concerns for their children. My cooperating teacher uses a take-home folder to communicate with parents. Students are sent home with their work from the day, important school reminders and notes or newsletters from the teacher. By having a take-home folder, parent communication is done almost instantly. She also uses the Remind101 website and emails to convey messages to parents. The purpose of the meeting was “To do better than last year”. The agenda included greetings, donation information, parent involvement, PTA involvement, mentorship program information, door prizes and refreshments. The PTA president greeted all teachers and parents and gave background about herself and her purpose at the school. She talked about popcorn donations which totaled out to be $3,486. The popcorn sale was a fundraiser done by parents. Parent involvement was present but the PTA president encouraged growth with parent support. She voiced that the PTA was there to help parents and teachers with anything they may need. Even though PTA can be a source of money, she wants teachers to know she is willing to volunteer in the classroom and work with the teachers on a daily basis. The CEO of a mentorship program here in Tuscaloosa (YMCA) also gave information about the mentoring program and its’ purpose. The mentorship program is a positive environment and outlet for students. The PTA president also issued door prizes to two teachers. The assistant principal was also acknowledged with a gift for principal appreciation month.
