Reflection On The Uniondale School Board Meeting

While watching the Uniondale School Board of Education meeting this was something very interesting. The people that attended this meeting where the school board members, the superintendent, the student member, business affairs and people from the local community. The people the present was the student member, two school board members and a couple people from the community. There were a couple things that the board talked about and the members of the community. Something that was very interesting at this board meeting was that the members of the board had a student member by the name of Campbell present during the meeting. Campbell raised a concern about the segregation that is happening in Long Island. She mentioned how she and other people …show more content…

One of the issues that were brought up was an upset parent who mentioned that his child suffers from narcolepsy. He was addressing that he wants the school board to help him because he feels as if the principal is penalizing his daughter. He mentioned that the principal mentioned that he will penalize the girl because of her lateness. He also mentioned that the principal refused to acknowledge his daughter’s sickness and how the principal bullied him. Following this one of the members from the board address this issue by mentioning that this issue that the parent has addressed is a personal issue that really should not be mentioned in this meeting. The school board member also mentioned that this should not be acceptable from a principal to be uninvolved. And how no child should be treated like this. By having school board meetings, it helps to see what the school’s needs. This is very important for the reason that this may be the only time that a concern parent or person voice might be heard. From this meeting, it was learned that the school board members are willing to help people that have concerns. An example, of this, was when the concern Pre-K parent was worried that she heard that Pre-K has been just a daycare. However, someone from the board mentioned to her that she would personally go with the parent the next day and show her how Pre-K is running during the day. This made the parent so happy because her concerns were being met. I have learned that school board members look out for the students and that they are the number one source that community members should go to if they have a concern or a suggestion to better their children’s
