Parent Involvement and the Effect on Academics There are many styles of parent involvement and parenting styles. Parental involvement includes attending school functions, helping with homework, or simply showing interest in what is occurring in school. Parental involvement is also both social aspects and intellectually stimulating activities beyond schoolwork. Parental involvement has different components including: parent-child relationship, aspirations and expectations a parent has for their child, and parental involvement within the school. (Hoang) Researchers have studied the relation between parenting styles and student’s motivation and achievement. Research shows that there is a link between parenting styles and the involvement they have in their child’s academics and school.Parenting styles are patterns of parenting behaviors and vary from authoritative to permissive. A parent’s view of their role, the beliefs they hold, and their engagement and behavior that influence a child are aspects of a parenting style. (Hoang) An authoritarian parent emphasizes conformity, obedience and respect for authority. An authoritarian parent is more likely to choose the sport classes, and social events their child participates in without an input from the child. Children with authoritarian parents often associate obedience and success with love, some children display aggressive behavior outside the home, while others may are fearful or overly shy around others, they have lower self-esteem, and have difficulty in social situations.(Hoang) Authoritative parents nurture individuality, encourage communication and openly communicate with their children, constructively respond to misbehavior, enforce rules, and stress learning as an equal r... ... middle of paper ... ...or parents to become actively involved in their child’s academics. Research supports that as a child ages parental involvement decreases, this is a vast problem that through communication, school activities, sending parent notices, and etc. could be fixed. As a future educator, I want to create a system to where my students’ parents know exactly what their child has learned that week, any problems that have arose, their strengths and weaknesses, and what they can do at home to ensure their child is growing academically. This could be done through a simple note home that the parent would have to sign. I think that as a teacher, I must remedy students academic problems through communication with the parents. Whether I am communicating directly or indirectly with parents, the outcome can only be better than what it would be without any communication at all.
