How Does Fracking Affect The Economy

699 Words2 Pages

Americans use energy frequently in our everyday lives. Today, most of us would not be able to live without it. We use energy when we use our cellphones, when we turn on the lights, when we drive cars, and so on. Out of these energy sources, the most consumed are fossil fuels - specifically 81% of the energy used by Americans (“US Energy Explained”). These fossil fuels support our country’s economy largely, supporting distribution of goods, for example. Although fossil fuels may be beneficial to America’s economy, the environmental damage that they create is not. The process of extracting and burning them destroys the environment and contributes to climate change.

A process of extracting oil and natural gases (types of fossil fuels) called fracking weakens the earth. Fracking is the process of injecting highly pressurized water jets into the ground to create fissures. Once the ground is cracked, fossil fuels can be taken out. These fracking operations have been linked to a number of earthquakes, for example, the situation in Oklahoma. In recent years, Oklahoma has seen a large rise in earthquakes, which have been induced by fracking (“Oklahoma’s Fracking-Induced Earthquakes Are Not Going to Stop”). If these earthquakes increase in severity, people could be killed. The blood of those people would be on the oil corporations’ …show more content…

Take this political cartoon here, detailing the hypocrisy of our government. Americans promote energy independence yet still depend on the oil that is hurting us. During offshore drilling, if there is a problem with the machinery, oil rigs can explode, leaking tons of oil into the water and onto land. A well known oil spill was the BP oil spill in 2010, spanning 1,000 miles on the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico (“Gulf Oil Spill”). The ecosystems surrounding the spill were largely affected, killing off thousands of animals. Seabirds collected oil on their feathers, enabling them to fly. The oil, which floated on the water, looked like food to fish. Dolphins and sea turtles washed up on beaches. Deep sea corals ingested the oil, harming the fish that took refuge in them. Even today, scientists are still studying the full effects of this disaster(“Gulf Oil Spill”), so more damage could be revealed in the future.

I acknowledge that fossil fuels are good for our economy. It enables us to gain from trade, increase our outputs, and distribute goods. But the cost of the environmental damage from these might eventually catch up with the profits. How could we extract energy if we have decimated all the good land for
