William Shakespeare was a man of many talents. He was a playwright, poet, and actor, having been very talented at all of them. He is known today as “the greatest writer in the English language” and the world’s “pre-eminent dramatist”. His work helped shape modern English, to let it transform into what it is today. According to English professor Jonathan Burton from Whittier College, roughly 90% of all American high schools teach Shakespeare. Consequently, there is a lot of controversy whether or not Shakespeare should still be put into our curriculum. To many students, Shakespeare has obtained a reputation of being boring, tedious, and as some put it frankly, a waste of time. They see it that way because his writing is very hard to understand firsthand, being so that it was written over 400 years ago. Students should learn about Shakespeare by choice, because requiring all students, reluctant or not, to read and learn to understand his writing is not going to engage the students the way they should be. His plays did an amazing thing in his time, they brought cultures together because of the interest in something they all had in common; the art and creativity of entertainment. “Artistic endeavors are a necessity.” (Kevin Spacey) Expression is what makes us human, Shakespeare knew how to bring that out into live theater. He paved the path for actors. The influence he has had on theater is astonishable. And, let’s not forget what Shakespeare did for the English language. He created a plethora of words and phrases, and inaugurated the development of refining the language. We owe a lot of what our world has come to to Shakespeare, and he should be learned about. As a student interested in theater learning about shakespeare, they could surely gain a lot from it. But not everyone is interested in theater, and not everyone can gain anything from learning about
