Louisa Adams was born in Rockingham, Richmond County, North Carolina. Adams was 8 years old when the Yankees came through North Carolina. The slave children were sent to work at the Salt Mines. While the parents were sent to work in the gardens and take care of their own hogs. Louisa Adams said she had a very hard time while in slavery. Their slave Master's name was Tom A. Covington, Sir. Many night they had to work in order to just stay alive. Louisa Adams stated that they were so hungry they would have to steal or parish just to survive. She stated that “Our food wuz bad” and “they had to use what they had made in the garden to eat”. They also ate their own hogs because they had no food and their Master did not feed them. She belonged to Sam Brodie, and he also owned the plantation. Mary Anderson stated that they had good food and plenty of warm homemade clothes and a comfortable home. Anderson said, there were about one hundred and sixty-two slaves on the plantation. And on Sundays all the African American slave children had to eat breakfast with the Master. Mary Anderson’s Master, did not believe in whipping his slaves, so when a slave got too hard for him to handle he would just sell the off to someone else. According to Mary Anderson, they were allowed to have prayer meetings and go to church with the white folks on the plantation. Furthermore, reading and writing was forbidden and they did not teach them how to read nor write. Ms. Anderson would go with Carrie to other plantations, which is how Anderson began to talk so well. There was a war going on and stories of them being free was spreading like crazy through each plantation. When the slaves heard of them being freed they started to act polite and continued to pray for the day the will all be free. The Yankees arrived and freed every last slave.
