In an ideal world an effective and efficient manager would also be an effective and efficient leader. Health Care is such a diverse field comprised of many different specialties, departments, staff and patients. In a world of constant change it is always challenging for any manager to meet the administrative and leadership needs of any team. The need of having a strong and dynamic individual in a management role to encourage their team to stay motivated, up to date with health care changes, and want to come back to work every day is vital to the success of any organization as a whole.

Life took her passion for improving and providing excellent health care services through a different path (Lewis, 2018). Her current role has allowed her to grow as a person, healthcare provider, and manager. It is her experiences as a manager that has molded her into the leader she is now. Even after completing her Bachelors in Healthcare Administration, Charnetta has continued her education and will soon graduate with a Masters Degree in Healthcare and Business Administration (Lewis, 2018).
Healthcare is a difficult field to continually both retain and recruit employees. According to Compdata Surveys and Consulting, the turnover rate in the healthcare field in 2015 was 19.2% and has been rising each consecutive year (Compdata Surveys and Consulting, 2015). Internal factors such as inability to integrate, impulsivity and integrity are three of the top reasons turnover rates are so high in the healthcare field (Bean, 2016). On the other hand, external factors that fuel the high turnover are workload, leadership and growth opportunities (Compdata Surveys and Consulting, 2015). Another huge responsibility that Charnetta spends about 75% of her time on is administrative work (Lewis, 2018). Part of her administrative work includes, but is not limited to, managing the employee schedule, reviewing the spending budget, addressing interpersonal issues amongst staff, attending leadership meetings, interviewing potential employees, contributing to policy enforcement, processing and ensuring compliance with such policies (Lewis, 2018). The other 25% of Charnetta’s time is spent supporting her team by helping with their everyday responsibilities (Lewis, 2018). She has found that working side by side with her staff has allowed her employees to respect her as a leader because she takes the time to help support her team (Lewis, 2018). Charnetta’s authentic leadership approach has promoted a sense of respect from manager to employees and has allowed her the advantage to learn what matters most to each team member (Lewis, 2018).
