Group Communication Strengths

Throughout my life, I have had many situations where I was put in a group and had to interact with people that I did not know. However, these interactions have changed me as a whole. These communications also helped me discover my weaknesses and strengths. Through all of my group interactions, I have established the sense of responsibility, gained motivation and willpower, and developed a network of relationships. Group interactions have allowed me to discover many weaknesses that have limited my potential to succeed in groups. “Verbal communication, or what we say, can hold a group together or drive a wedge among members, hindering the accomplishment of goals” (Keyton 24). Joann Keyton mentions, “[t]ime both enables and constrains group members, their communications, and their work on tasks and activities (Ballard & Seibold, 2000, 2004)” (88). I don’t like to procrastinate or wait until the last minute to complete my group work because I believe if one member of the group fails to do their part, then the whole group will be unsuccessful. Determination is an essential strength in group interactions as it can improve your overall performance and also help you succeed. Another strength that I have is that I like to help my group members with their tasks. I feel that each member of the group should contribute to each other’s work in some way. This allows groups to finish their work faster and more efficiently. For instance, in most of my group works, I have advised my group members on how and what they can use to improve their task. Currently, this semester, I have been working on a business project with my group in Business Management class. There are ten tasks in total and five members, so each member has to do two tasks. Most of the tasks correlate, so I advised my group members that we can help each other by sharing the data required and doing a little part of each other’s task.
