Recently, I was listening to a podcast and they brought up an excellent point relevant to psychology. They mentioned most people see a doctor when something is physically wrong (for example if your arm were to break), but they neglect seeking help when people experience moments of their life that consist of depression or anxiety. It is the unfortunate truth that there is still a stigma that exists when it comes to mental health. People are less likely to seek psychological health although humans are now as vulnerable as ever. In this class we learned about different types of ways mental health affects society and watching the series Grey’s Anatomy I created a connection between one of the characters Owen and his PTSD, or Posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder is a condition that develops after someone experiences or witnesses a scary of traumatizing event where there was physical harm present or at least possible in the situation. In Owens case it was due to his experience in war but it can be a range of events such as unexpected deaths, sexual assault, physical assault, accidents or disasters. Owen felt that he shouldn’t feel traumatized because others had it worse than him and this stopped him from accepting he needs help. There was an instant in the episode I watched where him and Christina were sleeping in the same bed together at night and the fan caused him to get flashbacks to the helicopters in the battlefield. He started to have a terrifying nightmare and ended up waking up on top of Christina choking her. For obvious reasons, this was his wake up call.
