One Who Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is a movie that portrays a life story of a criminal named McMurphy who is sent to a mental institution because he believes that he himself is insane. While McMurphy is in the mental ward, he encounters other patients and changes their perception of the “real” world. Before McMurphy came to the mental ward, it was a place filled with strict rules and orders that patients had to follow; these rules were created by the head nurse, Nurse Ratched. However, once McMurphy was in the ward, everything, including the atmosphere, changed. He was the first patient to disobey Nurse Ratched. This disorder is preventing him from having a normal life like the people in the “real” world. Just like the definition mentions, he is constantly worried and has excessive anxiety; these two factors are said to be the primary symptoms of General Anxiety Disorder (Oltmanns & Emery, 2014). The patients in the mental ward mostly signed themselves up to be in the institution because they self- diagnosed themselves with a mental issue. However, the fact the Charlie Cheswick signs himself up explicitly proves how he has a mental disorder. According to the DSM- 5, a person with General Anxiety Disorder “must be accompanied by at least three of the following symptoms: (1) restlessness or feeling keyed up or on edge, (2) being easily fatigued, (3) difficulty concentrating or mind going blank, (4) irritability, (5) muscle tension, and (6) sleep disturbance” (Oltmanns & Emery, 2014, p. 150). Already Cheswick fulfills more than half of the requirements to be considered having General Anxiety Disorder. Throughout the movie, Cheswick shows signs of having this disorder because he does not expect anything good to happen in his life; he always assumes that everything will go wrong. Moreover, Cheswick portrays difficulty of concentrating because he always worries about everything. He does not let go of his worries. In my opinion the main theme of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is conformity. The patients at this mental institution, or at least the one in the Big Nurse’s ward, find themselves on a rough situation where not following standards costs them many privileges being taken away. The standards that the Combine sets are what makes the patients so afraid of a change and simply conform hopelessly to what they have since anything out of the ordinary would get them in trouble. Such conformity is what Mc Murphy can not stand and makes him bring life back to the ward by fighting Miss Ratched and creating a new environment for the patients. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest represents a rebellion against the conformity implied in today’s society.
Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest explores the dysfunctions and struggles of life for the patients in a matriarch ruled mental hospital. As told by a schizophrenic Native American named Chief Bromden, the novel focuses primarily on Randle McMurphy, a boisterous new patient introduced into the ward, and his constant war with the Big Nurse Ratched, the emasculating authoritarian ruler of the ward. Constricted by the austere ward policy and the callous Big Nurse, the patients are intimidated into passivity. Feeling less like patients and more like inmates of a prison, the men surrender themselves to a life of submissiveness-- until McMurphy arrives. With his defiant, fearless and humorous presence, he instills a certain sense of rebellion within all of the other patients. Before long, McMurphy has the majority of the Acutes on the ward following him and looking to him as though he is a hero. His reputation quickly escalates into something Christ-like as he challenges the nurse repeatedly, showing the other men through his battle and his humor that one must never be afraid to go against an authority that favors conformity and efficiency over individual people and their needs. McMurphy’s ruthless behavior and seemingly unwavering will to protest ward policy and exhaust Nurse Ratched’s placidity not only serves to inspire other characters in the novel, but also brings the Kesey’s central theme into focus: the struggle of the individual against the manipulation of authoritarian conformists. People often find themselves as part of a collective, following society's norms and may find oneself in places where feeling constrained by the rules and will act out to be unconstrained, as a result people are branded as nuisances or troublemakers. In the novel One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, the author Ken Kesey conveys the attempt McMurphy makes to live unconstrained by the authority of Nurse Ratched. The story is very one sided and helps create an understanding for those troublemakers who are look down on in hopes of shifting ingrained ideals. The narrator of the novel is Chief Bromden, also known as Chief Broom, a catatonic half-Indian man whom everybody thinks is deaf and dumb. He often suffers from hallucinations in which he feels that the room is filled with fog. The institution is dominated by Nurse Ratched (Big Nurse), a cold, precise woman with calculated gestures and a calm, mechanical manner. When the story begins, a new patient, Randall Patrick McMurphy, arrives at the ward. He is a self-professed 'gambling fool' who has just come from a work farm at Pendleton. He introduces himself to the other men on the ward, including Dale Harding, the president of the patient's council, and Billy Bibbit, a thirty-year old man who stutters and appears very young. One of the novel’s most important feature is that the psych ward, Nurse Ratched, and all the other people looking after the patients in the asylum who are portrayed as tools of “sanity” in the novel are, in fact, insane in their own way. For them the meaning of freedom should be unknown to the patients and they shall be the one confining them to the boundaries of freedom as known by them. The men in the ward always try to find ways to cope with different problems in their life.Some choose a healthy and more creative way of dealing with their problems. However, some of those men do not have the ability to cope in a constructive manner. In those cases, they destroy the foundation that could uplift them. It can be the cause of someone becoming suicidal, an alcoholic, or a drug abuser. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, McMurphy uses control and manipulation to fill the void of his loneliness and feeling of betrayal.

This passage in One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest, by Ken Kesey, displays the distrust that the other Acutes, patients in the mental ward, begin to have for McMurphy. They question McMurphy’s intentions for helping the patients of the ward. He gets rules lifted for the other men and acquires them things from outside of the mental ward, such as magazines. All the questionings from the patients are insinuated by the Big Nurse and the rumors she spreads. The major theme that is being displayed in this portion of the novel is the absolute power that an authority controls. The theme is highlighted throughout the passage through use of plot and how drastically things changed in the ward over time.
In the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest we seen many examples of the four characteristics of a controlled environment. The four characteristics are status hierarchy, depersonalization, adjustment, and institutionalized. The characteristic that stood out most to me in this movie was institutionalization.
