If you weighted every bit of food you ate until you died you would be quite surprised how much food you ate. Studies show that the average American will eat about 50 tons of food thought their life, so what we put in our body will have a big impact in the long term. For instance if you start drinking a 12 ounce soda can each day starting when you are 10 years old and the life expectancy is 90 years, you will drink 29,220 cans of soda or ‪2,739.375‬ gallons of soda based on my calculations that account for leap years. Based on the CDC, poor nutrition and lack of exercise has been responsible for 300,000 deaths in the United States each year. Good nutrition is not hard to accomplish. It takes a few choices that will pay off in the long term. One of the most important skills you will need for good nutrition is the ability to read food labels. The first thing most people look at is the amount of calories. Calories are necessary for humans to survive but if you eat too much, your body will turn the excess into fat. Counting your calories is necessary to make sure that your calorie intake is balanced by the calories that you burn. Calorie needs vary from person to person but most people need somewhere between 1,600 and 2,800 calories. Eating your five servings of fruits and vegetables is a part of good nutrition which unfortunately not even half of all adults in America accomplish. You should eat vegetables, fruits, and whole-grain products along with lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and low-fat dairy products. You should also drink tons of water while trying to limit salt, sugar, alcohol, saturated fat, and trans fat in your diet.
