Good Day, Sandy Johnson,
Thank you for your informative post. I totally agree with you that it is important for those in leadership positions to influence the action of others to get a task completed (Trochim, Cabrera, Milstein, Gallagher, & Leischow, 2006). Nahavandi (2014), address leadership as the ability to guide and direct authoritative commands as an integral part of a leadership role. While a manager's role is shifted towards communicating their leader’s authoritative commands with their subordinates (Nahavandi, 2014). By managing people, it produces satisfaction and productivity from their employees that brings satisfaction to the leaders (Nahavandi, 2014). Therefore, public health leaders are given the role in influencing
Keita Powell is a pint-sized powerhouse. She is energetic, result oriented, focused, and driven. Ms. Powell is one of many women in the Mary Kay Cosmetics sales force. She rose through the ranks from Independent Beauty Consultant to Independent Elite Executive Senior Sales Director rather quickly because of her charisma, ability to build a sales team of energetic men and women, and sheer enthusiasm to succeed. One would think that she was an amazing leader to get so many women to follow her in teaching skin care, beauty techniques, increasing and maintaining sells goals and to rise from a very junior consultant to one who is an executive in the business. However, she has made mistakes along the way and continues to feign focus on her sales force and customers but the true focus is on her needs, wants, and desires as well as keeping the use of her free pink Cadillac. This paper will evaluate Ms. Powell's leadership approach through four leadership models discovered through the Unit 3 readings.
Leadership is about taking personal and social responsibility for working with others to achieve common goals.
“On leadership” was written by John W. Gardner (The Free Press, New York, 1990). He used seventeen chapters to explain and describe essential components for the leadership should be in a successful organization. This book not only has significant influence now, but also for the future. Below are my understanding about this book, which was divided into two parts. For the first part, I will pick up some perspectives which influence me most from this book. For the second part, which is my comments and critique about this book.
Several weeks ago, I stumbled on this quote “Greatness is not a function of circumstance; greatness is largely a matter of conscience, choice and discipline” by Jim Collins. Halfway into my Leadership One class, after a sober reflection; I realized that all the great leaders I had heard of and known personally exhibited traits of fascinating discipline, intense consciousness amongst other factors. Another interesting observation showed the allegiances of these leaders to a supernatural being. In my opinion, leaders and managers have quite a clear distinction which is tersely explained as “managers do things right and leaders do the right thing.” Nonetheless, managers administer and leaders innovate to be precise.
This semester along with participating in LTC over the summer I’ve learned leadership is more than being in charge. It’s about, “utilizing and developing skills to influence a group of individuals to achieve a common goal.” The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. An individual who stands not only for his cause but takes responsibility and motivates others also. There is a clear difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivator for others and inspires individuals to aim high and attain that aim. However a boss only supervises over his subordinates. Power naturally comes to a leader but that power is not a tool of leader. Rather if one tries to control the circumstances with power it turns out to be authoritarian or even suppressive in its expression.
In my own experience leadership is not just about one person telling others what to do; it’s about more than just giving orders. It is about getting a group of people to work together towards a common goal with more than just the goal in mind. It is also not just about setting goals for the group but also setting personal goals for the individual, guiding and supporting them all
Leadership is a process by which an individual influences others to accomplish a mutual objective and most scholars can agree that leadership can be defined as the nature of the influencing process. Leaders carry out this process by applying their leadership attributes, such as beliefs, values, ethics, character, knowledge, and ski...
Leadership is often described as the behavior of an individual when directing the activities of a group of people with a shared goal (Al-Sawai, 2013). It can be difficult to examine leadership in the context of health care, because research and theories of leadership were created in a business environment. These leadership styles are then applied in a health care framework, which has its own unique complexities (Al-Sawai, 2013).
Leadership is defined as ‘the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is achieved by cooperation, communication and cohesive behaviour. A leader is someone who stands for his cause and takes responsibility, but can also motivate others to do the same. There is a clear difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader can motivate others and inspires them to aim high and achieve anything they set their minds to. However a boss plays more of a supervising role. Power should naturally come to a leader but that power should be treated with respect and never be abused. A good leader should;
First of all, I would like to define leadership by quoting Chester I. Barnard: “Leadership is the quality of behavior of individuals whereby they guide people or their activities in organising efforts”. In my opinion this statement is absolutely true and explains the term in its best way. Therefore, it would be logical to state that leader is the person who is at the center of the power structure of the group, the one who keeps everyone in the group together, forms the goals and motivates people to achieve those goals. Leadership is a very influential chain of actions. Only leader is to shape and regulate, control and change various things inside the group like attitude, behavioral norms, and performance. Mostly, leaders
To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
A particular approach to the idea of leadership style is provided by ROBERT R. Blake and JANE S. Mouton. Blake and mouton managerial grid will be showed in the figure below reflect a theme that is common in many approach to leadership. That theme is that effective leadership requires attention to both task and people. We saw the theme in the Ohio state leader behavior dimensions of initiating structure and considerations. Likert also develops this theme in his theme research when he discusses job centered and employees centered supervision.
Leadership can be defined as the act of convincing people to willingly carryout defined objectives, it can also be defined as the ability to influence the course of action of people.
A leader needs to impart in a way that makes individuals feel what they have to do. As a leader of
Leadership is the ability to inspire confidence, support and trust among the people who need to achieve organizational goals. (Chan & Maubourgne 1992) It invariably requires using power to influence the thoughts and actions of other people in order to create new approaches and imagine new areas to explore. This definition has emphasized on influencing people to achieve set goals. In other words, we can say, the objective of leadership is achieving goals, meanwhile, the application is influencing other people to motivate the energy and stimulate the potential towards the goals.
