Paul Schmitz was the CEO of an organization called Public Allies from 200 to 2013 wrote about his experiences in leadership in the book Everybody Leads. Within the book, Paul describes in detail Public Allies’ goals, missions and objectives, as well as provides real life examples of leadership from the organization. Like the title suggest, Paul’s own experiences in life, as well as in the organization have provided him the experience necessary to argue that everybody (yes everybody) has leadership potential in them. Paul writes that the process of finding this potential within the individual then placing individuals in community leadership positions is what Public Allies is about. The author writes that in asset based community development and a core Public Allies belief, is that the symbolic “glass of water” is both half empty and half full. The author extends the example to individuals as well as communities in saying that “ever member of a community, no exceptions, has gifts and talents that contribute to the community.” Additionally, every individual and community has weaknesses, and the proper application of leadership is to combine everybody’s assets to counter everybody’s weaknesses in the process of improving our communities. Public Allies makes no attempt as an organization to find and correct weaknesses, they only identify Allies’ assets to train them into community leaders. These ideas align well with the authors definition of leadership. Leadership is an important factor of knowing how and why events in society happened in certain ways. Leadership in certain environment allows people to distinguish the past, and possibly attempt to assume the future, culture and structure of that environment. Leadership is defined in many different ways, Max Weber, for example, believed “a leader possessed power by virtue of his position (1922).” But in 1938 Chester Bernard defined leadership as “The ability of a superior to influence the behavior of subordinates and persuade them to follow a particular course of action (Barnard 1938).” With all the different definitions of leadership that is out there, the ultimate meaning of leadership is pretty simple because the meaning in the in word itself. An individual with leadership skills is assumed to lead his or her followers to success. In today’s society, many people believe that an effective leader not only bring the people of the organization together but also strive to bring success to the organization as a whole.

Leadership is mobilizing people through the use of five practices, that of modeling the way, inspiring the group vision, challenging the process, enabling others to achieve, and encouraging the emotions of others. Additionally, leadership is based upon credibility which includes the integrity of the leader and the trust of those following. Leadership is a soft science, just as anthropology, sociology and psychology. It cannot be proven exactly what it is. Leadership is an art, the skillful application of leadership behaviors beyond techniques is much the same as the skillful application of brushstrokes by a master painter. Leadership is both rational and emotional. It involves both sides of human experience. It includes actions and influences based on reason and logic as well those based on inspiration and passion. Leadership is a social process shared among all members of a group. Leadership development comes through experience. We all learn from our different experiences. Whether positive or negative, they are our tools for growth and development.
