For centuries humans have depended on natural evolutionary processes for intelligence. Gathering information or doing simple research was a process that required large amounts of time and equipment until the proper information was found. Over the past several years we have seen how technology has advanced for the better of humanity. In “Get Smarter” by Jamais Cascio he brings to our attention some of the ways technology has benefited us today and how it could continue to benefit us in the future as well. The internet has become one of the largest breakthroughs in technology and become one of the most helpful tools created so far.

The internet is no longer just a source for research, as Cascio has said “ the digital systems we rely upon become faster, more sophisticated, and capable too” (Cascio). What he means by this is that we can rely more on technology to help us because it’s developing to become efficient to our daily needs. For example, there are tasks we can now complete on the internet that used to require plenty of time. Things like going to pay rent, purchasing groceries, or going to the bank are all things that can now be done online due to the faster, more capable power of the internet. Once time consuming or complex tasks are now simple to complete with just a few clicks. This is a beneficial concept to those who have busy schedules, have difficulties with transportation, disabilities that don’t allow them to maneuver much, or anyone who just doesn't have the time, patients, or ability to stand in long, never-ending waiting lines. According to the previously mentioned study done by Nanjing University of Science and Technology with the University of South Australia “elderly people are increasingly using mobile devices to conduct online banking, find jobs, access medical help, and obtain entertainment information” (Ma). Education, expression, accessibility, these are all benefits to us as internet users. As Cascio said “Google isn't the problem; it's the beginning of a solution” (Cascio). Google is a part of the internet therefore Cascio’s words can still be applied to the idea of the internet being a tool of more use than harm. Technology has proven to be nothing but helpful by improving the life we live. The world is constantly changing and as humans we are too, as Cascio said “How do we cope? By getting smarter” (Cascio). This means we've allowed technology to assist in the tasks we can't do alone and found faster and better methods for problem solving instead of taking difficult and struggling
Cep and Ross both agree that the Internet is a necessity. Cep states, “we not only love and socialize online but live and work there too. (Cep 1)” In this statement she is showing the obvious reasons that people use the internet. The internet isn’t used only for social aspects but for work obligations too. She goes on to quote the Pope, “The digital environment is not a parallel or purely virtual world but is part of the daily experience of many people, especially the young. (2)” This quote shows that everyone in the world realizes the necessity of the internet. Even the Pope understands and discusses its value. Ross too reiterates the importance of the internet. One quote that really drilled it home was this, “And now that going online is a part of everyday life.. (Ross 3)” A quote couldn’t exemplify the Internets necessity any more. In another source titled “Mobile And More Productive? Firm-Level Evidence On The Productivity Effects Of Mobile Internet Use” by Irene Bertschek and Thomas Niebel it is discussed that the necessity for the internet exceeds just computer access. It shows that having the internet at all times, via mobile phones, is also important. In this article they state, “The econometric analysis shows that firms ' labour productivity significantly increases with the share of employees with mobile internet access. There is no doubt that technology has been affecting our world and will continue to do so. The question, however, is whether new discoveries are beneficial to the world or not. Clive Thompson’s article, “Smarter than You Think: How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better,” focuses how technology impacts the way the brain works. His argument emphasizes that that the duo of men and technology increases our intellectual capacity. Thompson’s argument is very strong and he is successful in proving his ideas to his readers.
Humans are becoming more technologically-efficient every day. New inventions and innovations are constantly being made. The Internet is becoming more “reliable” every day. However, how much do we really get from the constant advancement of Internet use and smarter technology? Should we look at their contributions to the world as a benefactor or a curse? The common effect of “artificial intelligence” in the technology we use every day is examined by two brilliant authors, Nicholas Carr and Jamias Cascio. In Carr’s article, “Is Google Making Us Stupid”, he explains the effects of the Internet and technology in our society and claims that the overuse of technology is dangerous and can affect how our mind operates. Jamias Cascio, on the other hand, uses his article “Get Smarter” to show the positive effects of technology in our constantly adaptive society claims that technology may just be making our society smarter and more efficient. While Carr and Cascio both use the claim of cause in their articles to provide valid points on how technology affects our society, Carr’s article proves to be more effective because it focuses on skeptical-based evidence and uses a variety of appeals and proofs.

Clive Thompson, award winning freelance, journalist, blogger and writer on culture and technology, in his 2013 essay “How Technology Is Changing Our Minds for the Better” adapted from his book Smarter than You Think, argues that as technology gets smarter so do humans by collaborating together.
The recent revolution of internet and dot-com boom has brought more people familiar to computers and the Internet. It seems like that we can hardly find our way through everyday life with out using or having an internet connected computer next to us. The way we think, live, and communicate was changed once for all with the invention of networked communication of computers. Computers are no longer a piece of machine that sits on top of our desk for us to admire the marvelous technology brought by the geeks and freaks of 80's, but for us to constantly use and put in to work. And in a way, environment which we live in, the society, schools, jobs, forces us to make friends with that technology. Just like when you don't have a telephone you will have hard time communicate with meeting with your friends, absence of instant messaging programs, or ability to use one, will place you out of the circle of events happening with the friends, or don't let you do the work as fast or as good as the one who uses the technology. This is one of the reasons why increasing number of people choose to have computers and internet as a prime communication tool not only between friends and for socialization, but for everyday life. The method through which knowledge is gained has transitioned from deep reading to fast skimming. Every time a web page is opened the viewer is bombarded with information, almost every page has advertisements or links to additional information lining its sides. The Internet has made mountains of information available to almost anyone. It is fast and easy to find information and facts. Essentially the Internet has become the fast food of knowledge. It is convenient but it skips the element of effort.
In many situations, one can find that most work and programs run online, in school most assignments are done online or turned in online, but this can have a positive effect of saving time and increasing efficiency. For example, if one was assigned to write a research paper it would take a substantial amount of time to gather books and access data, not everyone can have access to studies done at Harvard University. But with the internet and technology, research and accessing certain studies and data is made easier and faster in comparison to looking through many books just for certain information. Google search also helps narrow down one search by providing the most useful, relevant, and current information firsts then all the rest following. In addition, technology saves people a lot of money, besides the obvious reason being apps that give you discounts and coupons for certain goods and services, the internet can save money in areas one would not come to think of.
