What if all cars in the United States were powered by electricity?
If all cars in the United States were powered by electricity instead of gas, many things would be affected. One thing that would be affected is the pollution levels. They would decrease because, according to Union of Concerned Scientists, cars and trucks that are gas powered are responsible for about one fifth of all of the United States pollution emissions. They emit roughly 24 pounds of carbon dioxide and various greenhouse gases for every one gallon of gas. 5 of the 24 pounds of CO produced per gallon is made from the extraction, production, and delivery of diesel or gas. The other 19 pounds is made by the trapping of heat in the car which is then propelled through the exhaust pipe, and into the …show more content…

Another factor that would change is the overall health of humans. Fossil fuel-powered cars produce carbon monoxide, and release it through their tailpipes. Carbon monoxide is proven to have damaging effects on the human body. According to silentshadow.org, the long term effects of carbon monoxide on the human body include: permanent heart damage, damage to brain function, and can affect a person’s memory negatively. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, short term effects of CO poisoning are that oxygen flow to major organs is reduced significantly and amnesia. If there is less carbon monoxide being produced due to the lack of gas powered cars, it would stand to reason that these negative effects on the human body would be reduced and health of the population would increase. Also, according to the CDC, due to less CO being produced, the national average for death from carbon monoxide poisoning in males(0.22 out of 100,00 men)and females(0.07 out of 100,00 women) would fall due to a drop in carbon monoxide production due to none of the cars directly producing it.
