One may ask how the Greenhouse Effect is so detrimental to the environment. The burning of fossil fuels expels extra greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The most abundant gas released from this process is Carbon Dioxide. When Carbon Dioxide levels are high, this in turn causes the temperature to rise causing many different things to happen, such as the melting of the polar ice caps. Should the polar ice caps melt, this would not only wash out many different ecosystems from the excess water on land, but it would also release a great deal of Carbon Dioxide into the atmosphere that had been trapped in the ice caps.
Global warming does not require a reduction of the standard of living of people. However it does demand a rapid shift in the patterns of consumption of fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas, to an economy more reliant on solar energy, hydrogen gas, wind biomass, and other renewable energy sources. The term greenhouse effect is used to describe the increased warming of the Earth's surface and lower atmosphere due to increased levels of carbon dioxide and other atmospheric gases that absorb radiated energy in the atmosphere and then reradiate it back to the surface. But if it were not for the greenhouse effect, temperatures at the Earth's surface today would be much colder then they are now, and life as we know it could not exist. Scientists are now concerned that the greenhouse gases are being increased by human actions to levels that could be very harmful to life on Earth.
As a result, the world experiences global warming due to the greenhouse effect resulting from carbon II oxide. Notably, human activities such as industrialization and burning of fuels have also contributed towards global warming. In turn, climate changes have had adverse effects on human health and the environment. For decades societies have been concerned about climate change, and in recent years it has sparked a debate as to whether the earth is warming due to causes by humans or through a natural progression. There are scientists on both sides of the debate, but one thing that they can agree on is that the earth is in fact warming. Studies have indicated a rise in the carbon dioxide levels (CO2) in the earth’s atmosphere that can be attributed to the what is known as the greenhouse affect (Simon, Reece, Dickey, 2007). Natural occurring gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor act as source for trapping heat into the atmosphere, however CFC’s or chlorofluorocarbons are man made synthetics (Simon et al., 2007). These synthetic gases accumulate to the already natural gases and increase the amount of heat that gets trapped in the atmosphere (Simon et al., 2007).
One major reason to account for this shift is the utilization of fossil fuels into the environment. The key to surviving for any organism is adapting to the environment, and planet Earth could use some help in that department. There has been an exponential increase of pollution throughout the world, mainly due to the increase in fossil fuel burning, as well as the increase of associated air emissions. Burning fossil fuels is the most common way of creating energy.
