According to a study conducted by General Social Survey (GSS), the number of Americans who say that they have no friends have tripled since 1985 (Heid, 2015). This phenomenon has been a cause of concern for sociologists as the absence of these two emotions have triggered individual responses in the form of actions not usually taken in normal circumstances. The show is loosely based on the memoir by Eddie Huang, food personality and co-owner of Baohaus, a Manhattan-based restaurant specializing in a Taiwanese street food called gua bao. Set in the 1990s, the show centers around the experiences of protagonist Eddie Huang, an 11-year-old Asian-American, and his family as they relocate from Washington D.C. to Orlando, Florida4. The show is created by Nahnatchka Khan and is directed by both Nahnatchka Khan and Eddie Huang, whose memoir the show is loosely based after. Actor Hudson Yang portrays young Eddie Huang. Actress Constance Wu plays Jessica Huang, mother of Eddie Huang, and actor Randall Park plays Louis Huang, father of Eddie Huang. Forrest Wheeler and Ian Chen plays Eddie’s younger brothers Emery and Evan respectively.
