Pursuing a career as a Fashion Retail Buyer involves determining the production of clothing that department stores catalog and online sites obtain each season. The inventory is in the buyer’s hands to make sure that stores will make profit from their purchases. A buyer must be familiar with sales trends, attend trade shows, and be able to work with large department stores, chain stores, or boutiques. Being a buyer, can lead an individual to work in different countries, states, and cities. However, this field can get very hectic at times because the merchandise is being imported from different corporations around the world. Upon obtaining the position as a Senior Production Manager, Tejada grew her experience. She states, “During my college years I worked in the fashion retail industry and also did two internships prior to graduation. My internships were in a London based company called Viyella, and another in a NY fashion company called Liz Claiborne.” It is proven that, college graduates with courses or experience in relevant areas will have the best chance of securing choice positions (VGM Career Horizons 370). “According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail buyers held 156,000 jobs in 2004. Employment of retail buyers was expected to grow more slowly than average for all occupations between 2004 and 2014” (“Retail buyer 103”). Several individuals find themselves working in a retail development, or wholesale trade institution. Although this profession is essential all around the world, cities such as New York City, Chicago, and Dallas have the highest job opportunities. This career is intensely fast paced, with more than 40 hours of work a week. Depending on the location and season traveling four to five times a month is likely (VGM Career Horizons 369). Over the years, the Fashion Industry has acquired numerable objections to the trend of Fast Fashion. The idea behind Fast Fashion is to revolve cheap new collections and stimulate consumption. As these fashion cycles are moving faster, the mass production of clothing deals attract consumers to their affordable prices, and the continuous cycle of fresh, trendy appealing items (Tan). Due to the productivity, the poor quality of clothing becomes unvalued that has led to environmental and economical damage. Several companies initiate this production of clothing:
The reason why Fast fashion has escalated through the years is because of the Internet and the growing Ecommerce business. People see what is on the runway and want the same looks fast and at affordable prices. You also have the convenience of shopping from home which is what is really hurting the retail industry but shaping the Fashion Industry shopping trends. The Fast Fashion companies are also profitable because they can react quicker to trends and sales and maximize on profit.
