I do not think people are born evil, but I don’t think they are born good either, the way the person acts is mostly on their parents, where they live, and their self. Parents are an important thing in a person’s life. The parents are usually the first influence on the baby. The way a baby could grow into an evil person is on how their parents treat them, if the parents treat them badly they will have a tendency to become a bad person. If the parents are kind and treat them with care, they will have tendencies to become a good person. The place where someone lives also affects their nature. Good and evil make the world we are living in today. However evil stands out more than good and people tend to focus on the evil behavior of humans more often. Human nature tends to decide that if someone looks evil they will be evil. The good and the bad make up the goodness in life. It is impossible to always be good or evil but there are things that can make us better or worse as a person. For one to be free, one must live in a world of evil and good.
A timeless question that continues to stump psychologists. Are humans born good? Do we learn evil traits or are they imprinted into mind as we come into the world. In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, written in the early 1800’s, this same question comes into play. Shelley presents two completely different beings, one brought up with a family in a happy setting, the other in solitude hated by everyone. Both human in nature brought up completely different. Frankenstein and the Monster show traits of both good and evil, however, they are both born good.
Shirley Jackson’s short story “ The Possibility of Evil” is about a little old lady named Miss Strangeworth. She thinks she’s in charge of the town and to make sure it’s free from all evil because her grandfather built the first house on Pleasant Street. At first Miss Strangeworth is a nice little old lady, worrying about people and wondering what others are up to. Then in the middle of the story she becomes a little rude to a few of the townspeople. In the end Miss Strangeworth thought she was getting rid of the evil in the town, but in reality she was causing evil in the town by showing her true colors and being extremely mean and cruel to others. Don’t judge a book by it’s cover because people aren’t always what they seem to be.
In the world of the living, evil is not inherent and can change or influence a person’s aspect of the world based on the community they are in. Evil is the force of things that are morally wrong and the matter of suffering, wrongdoing and misfortune (Merriam Webster). Evil is not inherent because an evil community can change or influence a person’s way of thinking, can consume people the more they are relinquished to it, and can mold a person when a person has power or feel a certain way. Furthermore, evil can be claim as not inherent from reading about Josef Mengele, Stanley Milgram, and the Stanford Prison Experiment. I will persuade my point that evil is not inherent from the sources that depicts the claim of evil.
The personality of an individual and many other aspects of their life are integrated into their lifestyle as they grew up under the guidance of their parents. Some say that a person is born twice; once under the wings and guidance of their parents, and again when they themselves have children. The lines that define good and evil are not written in black and white; these lines tend to blur into many shades of grey allowing good and evil to intermingle with each another in a single human being. The parent’s behaviours have a strong influence on the children in their family. A parent’s behavior can affect children long-term positivity if they provide a functional family or negatively if they provide a dysfunctional atmosphere. Certain things have to go wrong in the family in order for the family to turn dysfunctional. Children learn to grow up a lot faster if they have deficient parents. Deficient parents require a lot of emotional support, as they are not able to provide any for their children. By being forced to mentally care for their parents, while they are not fully emotionally developed has a negative effect on children’s emotional development. This leads to the failure to fulfill their parent’s emotional needs thus creating the feeling of guilt that remains in the children’s adult years.
For example, kids that grew up in a lovely and caring environment may see the world as a good and safe place. Our adult behavior reflects what we experience during our childhood. If a child had a father that would beat their mother, they're most likely to become an abuser towards people or a bully in school. Grown-up kids who had been abused or raped in their childhood, their emotions and life will be affected when they grow up and they're most likely to not being able to control their emotions. Parents play an important role in their kid's life, actually a big percentage of the education we receive as a child is the reason for our adult behavior. Parental relationship may alter a child's intimacy with others as an adult. When it comes to the essentials that are best to the development of a child and emotional well-being, a good parenting is important. On the contrary, hurtful and traumatic events in the childhood will cause them to grow up with low self-esteem, feeling worthless or hopeless and those experience will stay with them for the rest of their
Are human beings born to be good? Or are we naturally born to be evil? A person’s nature or essence is a trait that is inherent and lasting in an individual. To be a good person is someone who thinks of others before themselves, shows kindness to one another, and makes good choices in life that can lead to a path of becoming a good moral person. To be a bad person rebels against something or someone thinking only of them and not caring about the consequences of their actions. Rousseau assumed, “that man is good by nature (as it is bequeathed to him), but good in a negative way: that is, he is not evil of his own accord and on purpose, but only in danger of being contaminated and corrupted by evil or inept guides and examples (Immanuel Kant 123).” In other words, the human is exposed to the depraved society by incompetent guardians or influences that is not of one’s free will in the view of the fact that it is passed on. My position is humans are not by nature evil. Instead, they are good but influenced by the environment and societies to act in evil ways to either harm others or themself.
Buddha once said that “it is a man’s own mind, not his enemy or foe, that lures him to evil ways”. In my opinion man is inherently evil, who succumbs to the corruption of the human society. I believe that Man have the ability to distinct good, from evil based on factors they have learned from surrounding others. From the dawn of time man has accumulated power through communities, parties, villages etc. We can infer that man was evil throughout history due many congregations, rituals, and basically the overall culture that was prominent before the times of Christ. You may read in many books of the Puritan era where witches were burned due to the simple version of today’s autocracy. Man would accuse them of witchcraft and have them murdered. A prime example would be the Salem Witch Trials. During these trials, it was easy to believe that in 1692, with an Indian war raging less than 70 miles away, that the devil was close at hand (Linder). As we progress through time we continue to see these occurrences through genocides, and massacres. An example would be Hitler’s reign, and his genocide of the Jewish people. They learn the ways of good and bad through association of what their family has done. Also that parent’s have the upmost influence on their children, and children imitate what they see, hear, or accomplish. I believe that Man is born evil, but he is taught the way of right from wrong from his parents. Man today has the opportunity to choose from good, or evil. Unfortunately, in today’s era, we have built nations that have the will to supersede others, which clouds their judgment on what is good or bad. This has led to the great famines of man. Man is inherently evil because of war, avarice, and envy.
As sentient beings, we are able to make choices about what we say and do as well as understanding somewhat the effects of our actions. Therefore, it is my belief that no one has or ever will be born inherently good or evil. Instead, it is life experiences and observations made whilst growing and developing which shape the mental state, causing our perception of what is moral and what is immoral.
