Professional Identity Statement Before beginning my journey as a school counselor, I feel it is important to reflect upon the education and experiences that have shaped my views as a school counselor. School counseling is a unique profession in which is always evolving. Growing from the expanding experiences of the counselor and adapting to the changing needs of the community. It is the counselor’s role to be a leader and advocate for all students and families in the schools community. A school counselor is the system change agent. As a school counselor, I plan to be a life-long learner and devoted to the equity of all students.

Starting the program my view of a school counselor was drastically different than it is leaving the program. I began at Loyola knowing that I wanted to help students succeed in school. I recognized that students face obstacles in their lives that are out of their control and I wanted to be a positive influence/support in their life to help them achieve their goals. This program has opened my eyes to complexity of the job and the range of cases I may see over the years. My internship experience has introduced me to counselors that are devoted to being a leader and advocate for their students. They recognize a population of need and work to create equity for those students. The multicultural class that I took at Loyola truly challenged my views, but worked to change me for the better. I feel that at the start of this program I was blind to some of the inequities in the school system.
