Abstract In this paper, it will be explored the meaning behind the ASCA national model, its importance, and how it will shape the counselors to be. As a counselor in training, it was understood the ASCA national model is a guideline for professional school counselors to be more productive and sufficient in the workplace. Therefore, as a trainee it is vital to grasp and implement these four components: foundation, management system, delivery system, and accountability. The compressive school programs are driven by student data and are based on academic, career, and personal/ social development. The programs are collaborating between the counselor, parents, and many other educators to create an environment that promotes student excellences (ASCA, 2016). A productive school counselor will focus on their skills, time and energy on direct and indirect services to all students. Therefore, to achieve those goals, the ASCA recommends that a school counselor should not have more than 250 students and that 80 percent or more of a counselor’s time in direct and indirect services. As a result, we will focus on the delivery of those services. Direct Student Services Direct student services are in person interaction between the counselor and student. The services are described as, school counseling core curriculum, individual student planning, and responsive services. As a trainee, it has been well-educated that those three aspects of direct service is vital for the success of each student. Deciding to become a Student Guidance Counselor was not a fly by night decision. I did a great deal of reading and research before making a decision. I knew once I started a graduate program in School Guidance Counseling, it would be both challenging and a commitment until the end. I am somewhat nervous about this new journey that I am about to partake; however, I am ready to accept the challenge and make the commitment. Middle school marks a very exciting, yet challenging time for many students, parents, and teachers. Student Support Services provide many different services where they communicate with their students face to face or by technological communication. Counselors’ help students develop course schedules, future scheduling, and make sure their general education classes are complete. The counselors help students with different issues, support in setting realistic goals, and advising on personal issues. The participants also receive free academic tutoring for general education classes.
I cannot recall a more rewarding experience than helping facilitate a child’s education while enabling parent participation alike. These experiences have drawn me to my current position as an Educational Assistant where I am constantly interacting and establishing relationships with students, learning about their goals and aspirations. The program model addresses the dropout problem through assisting troubled students and their families. Families often have difficulty accessing and navigating through the maze of public and private services. School-based coordinator, bridge the gap between local resources and the public school setting, where they are accessible, coordinated and accountable. Site Coordinators are the single point of contact and fill a pivotal role, working inside the school to provide integrated student services. Site coordinators connect students and families with community partners and resources that address both academic and nonacademic needs.

Counselors have large shoes to fill. They not only administer assessments, but are also involved in group counseling, individual counseling, and have to plan and implement comprehensive school guidance programs. A counselor must know and be competent in all realms of their position. School counselors work with all children, including children with disabilities in various settings within the school (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 449). As stated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school counseling services must be made available to all students in special education programs as part of their right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (Bowen & Glenn, 1998; Clark, 1998). School counselors are to take on this role in the educational and personal-social well being of students in special education programs. Federal law does require that children, who receive special education services, and do not display appropriate behavior have a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) team (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005) p 449). This team constructs a BIP. Since counselors should be active on the FBA team, there is a need here that must be addressed because this article defines a lack of knowledge present with practicing counselors. With that, counselors do receive relevant training throughout their program. There are only so many classes and hours of instruction that the pre-counselors receive. The school counselors meet the needs of student in three basic domains: academic development, career development, and personal/social development. The knowledge, understanding, and skill in these domains are developed through classroom instruction, assessments, consultation, counseling, coordination, and collaboration. For example, in assessment, school counselors may use a variety of personality and vocational assessment methods to help students explore vocation needs and interests. The classroom guidance lessons are designed to be preventive and include self-management and self-monitoring skills. The responsive services component of the school counselor's role provides individual and/or small group counseling for students. For example, if a student's behavior is interfering with his or her achievement, the counselor will observe that student in a class; provide consultation to teachers and other personnel to develop (with the student) a plan to address the behavioral issues, and then work together to implement the plan. They also help by providing consultation services to family members.
At the beginning of the school year, the counselors had a scope and sequence they followed with the areas of; transitions, character and diversity, personal safety/wellness, and careers. The scope and sequence is modeled after the WCSCM’s Academic Standards for School Counseling covering the three domains of academic, personal/social, and career development. The standards help answer the question, “How are students different as a result of the school counseling program.” After each description of a lessons plans, was an explanation of each content standard which correlated with the lesson. While at my internships, I assisted with lesson planning and facilitating guidance lessons on careers, transitions or Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), as well as, groups on character development, new student groups, and diversity. The WCSCM is completely embedded in the counseling programs at both of the districts I worked
