Imperialism is a policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force. There can either be good or bad imperialism, but throughout history, it has usually been bad imperialism. Imperialism is not acceptable because it is based off of nationalism and the European countries were just trying to control other countries because they knew it would help them. One reason why imperialism is not acceptable is because the European countries were just trying to control other countries instead of help the countries. In a political cartoon called “The Devilfish in Egyptian Waters”, it depicts England as an octopus and has control over many countries except Egypt. In the anthem “Rule Britannia!”, the whole song is about how Britons rule and they will never be ruled by anyone because they will never be anyone's slaves. Britons thought everyone should understand this which is why it is their anthem. They think very highly of themselves. “France in Africa” is another example of nationalism in imperialism. France believed their country was the best and wanted to bring it to Africa. France had christianity in their country so they decided to bring it to Africa. In an article about imperialism in Africa, it states “As was true of all European empires at the time, the French in North Africa followed a program based upon the three “Cs” of colonialism—the civilizing mission, commerce, and Christianity”. This shows how the French thought it was justified that they brought Christianity to Africa. Just because it was a big part of the French culture, they thought it would be ok to bring it to Africa as well. In Africa, the French didn’t really like the muslim population because they thought they were better than them so there was 50 years of brutal warfare against the muslim population by the French
