Abstract
In the world today, the aging population has been identified as one of the main issues facing global health care systems. It is a known fact that with advancement in age, the likelihood of acquiring health problems will increase hence escalating the demand for health care resources. This will in turn have an effect on health institutions. Future nurses will have to experience the challenging task of providing care for the elderly population. In this respect, a review of previous studies shows that nursing students tend to have a negative perception of the elderly. This may be influenced by personal beliefs, observations, experience, values as well as culture. As long as they continue to have this attitude, it will be difficult to recruit and train nurses in this field of gerontology. Thus it is important to address these issues and in turn evaluate the role of health care professionals to help change their perceptions; they should develop a more positive relationship in order to meet the requirements or rather needs of the elderly (Eltantawy et al. 2013).

Training and development practices through mentorship and provision of knowledge will aid in changing the negative attitudes of nurses to positive (Brown, Nolan and Davies 2008). The creation of approachable, visible and involved management in the health care may aid in ensuring that health care professional are empowered, informed and personally supported (Brown, Nolan and Davies 2008).
