Family is a very important part of a person’s life because they shape the person you become. In the United States there are more than 300,000 children who do not have a family and are put into foster care. There are many parents that are willing to adopt these children and make their family ideal come true. Weaving is the act of taking different fabrics and conjoining them to make a product. The tighter you pull the fabric the closer the weaving which makes the product stronger. The only problem is the issue of race because race plays a very influential role in this country so therefore you have to take that into account. It is more common for these adoptive families to be transracial. Therefore there are two different races within the family. Families of transracial adoptions have many unique qualities because they have two different cultures under one roof. The problem with transracial adoption is the cultural difference between the parents and the child. The family is not prepared to understand the child’s background or the child’s culture. Relatability is also something that the child needs in the household and this would something that this family would lack. Like we talked about in class the child would suffer because they do not have anyone in their family to relate to. A child’s self-esteem would most likely be lower than a child growing up in a same race family. The child does not see anyone in their family that looks like them so they feel as if they are not good enough. It is hard for a child to fully understand as to why they are different from their families and why they were not blessed to look like their family. This creates self-identity issues for the child because they do not know who they should identify with and cannot tell where they fit in. RACE: SMOKE AND MIRRORS The study of race and its social formation in the article "Racial Formations" by Michael Omi and Howard Winant challenge our socially accepted concepts of "race", race being defined as the social categorization of black, white, yellow and red people. Race plays a pivotal role in society because it has a overwhelming influence on an individuals life choices and outcome. Society has historically placed positive and negative stereotypes on different races. Whites are presented and in many cases perceived as the standard of civility and beauty. People of color are conveniently grouped together as disingenuous to American patriotism in addition to being subjected to perpetuating stereotypes such as being lazy, criminal, and deviant to general society.

White privilege is a concept that many people are unfamiliar with, but not because they do not benefit from it. In the paper “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” by Peggy McIntosh argues that white people have an advantage over those of other races, though most are completely unaware of it or simply take it for granted. Her recognition of white privilege came from the concept of male privilege. She says that she looked at that concept and realized there was certainly something similar to it in regards to race (McIntosh, 1988, 11). This paper has great importance to the function of society. Because many white people do not recognize their unfair and disproportionate advantage in society, racial tensions can rise even more because there is a major wall blocking people from fixing the current issues.
The analysis explored in this document is implementing a program UNIT for parents adopting a different race from their own. Adopting outside of a race is a life altering decision because of regulating mechanisms that condition people to accept or reject individuals based on their appearances. There are not any programs that guide transracial adoptions after they occur. Society as a whole has its own prejudices. The adoptive parents should know about their children’s cultural backgrounds. Society is not very conscience of prejudging it is just something that is a part of life. This is unfortunately one more issue dealt with by adopted children.

Peggy McIntosh describes the white privilege as "an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, code-books, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks (McIntosh 1988, p175).” I believe that the white privilege is the same as racism because the word white privilege itself explains it. It is privilege given and offered towards only the white people. If someone is given a special privilege because they are white then that is racism.
In present day, now that racism prejudice and segregation is something that children learn about in history books, there is a new issue surrounding adoption. It is now considered controversial when a couple of one race wishes to adopt a child of another race. Transracial adoption is a topic that must be confronted and dealt with so that all children in need of a permanent home can get the best family possible.
There are many psychological effects that happen to people who are adopted. Many grow up in the same family as they were born to, knowing who they are and where they came from. Usually it is passed by many and taken for granted that they know where they got their looks from. For people who are adopted, it is a completely different story. There is loss when it comes to finding out who we are as people, if someone is adopted they have questions about themselves that many cannot answer. I question myself constantly, “Why was I put up for adoption. What do my birth parents look like? Do I have siblings or am I a twin? Where would I be if I was not adopted?” There are definitely more questions that could be asked, but it would lead to more wondering and to feeling more lost. Knowing only half of yourself is difficult, it is hard to grow with and accept. There will be concepts in people 's heads, and when certain events happen it messes with the mind where it is possible to shut down.

In Racial Formation in the United States From the 1960s to the 1990s, authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant present several viewpoints on evolving and differing racial theories while presenting their own findings and theories that have resulted from years of study and observation. They believe the present and past theories on race and racial definitions throughout history, individually, are severely inaccurate when applied to modern day and “[fail] to capture the centrality of race in American politics and American life” (p. 2). They argue that race is much more complex than how it has been presented and offer up their own theories in order to rectify previously believed notions of race.

A lot of patience and love is needed to handle the criticism. There is a high monetary cost, but the reward in the end is priceless. A person must be completely non-bias for the relationship to work in a biracial family. A parent must be able to deal with a sometimes troubled or physically challenged child.

Slavery then took the idea of family, and then butchered it in front of society. Families were disregarded when slaves were divided or sold onto plantation; some owners would purposely try to separate them because they didn’t want their slaves to be distracted when working, “Family separation through sale was a constant threat” (Williams). By removing the basis of family, slavery dehumanized millions of people. For some slaves, the only thing that kept them going was the hope that they may one day be reunited with their families. Unfortunately, this was not a common result as fathers and mothers were often sold and never see their children again. The fear of separation haunted families who were together and terrorized those that were faced with the split. It is based on a number of things but more than anything else it’s based on skin's melanin content. A “race” is a social construction which alters over the course of time due to historical and social pressures. Not only on the inside do they feel different, but on the outside they feel that they are not like other children because of who they parents are. They may also feel like they do not know who they really are because their birth is a missing piece of their life therefore they feel stranger to everyone. Being adopted can affect the child’s self esteem. However adopted children do not have to live their life with questions of the past holding them back. They can be just as successful as anybody else. When it comes to ‘white’, we usually associate it with death, less earth-bound, closer to God and angels, as well as cleanliness, purity, and light, these symbolisms of the color of white over time became the characteristic as a race. My favorite part of the reading is where Dyer pointed out how racism is occasionally a part of the cultural non-consciousness that we all inhabit, he specifically addresses how in Western representation (in film, art, music, books, and media), white is overwhelming and disproportionately centralize as ‘a human race’, instead of a certain race.
