Being transgender refers to having a gender identity that differs from one’s assigned gender. Therefore, one can be male biologically, but behavior and feelings are of the female gender. In a move to ensure equality of all persons as stipulated in the constitution, there have been discussions mainly targeted at the issue of bathrooms in schools. Transphobia has affected how transgender people relate with other people, and the bathrooms can be used to prevent it at an early age. Also, some other advantages have been identified with unisex bathrooms for instance reduction of bullying and drug abuse in male bathrooms. In the United States, more than 700,000 people have identified themselves as transgender. These statistics include people of all ages from the children to the elderly. In several surveys conducted in U.S. schools, several children were identified as transgender. For instance, in a 2015 survey in Dane County, 1.5% of the students were transgender (Hoffman). With the revelation, there is a call for unisex bathrooms to accommodate all these students. For example, a nine-year-old student was denied access to the female bathroom in Queensland (Hosking and Sun). This shows that transgender people sometimes go through a hard time; especially in societies where being a transgender has not been accepted. Statistics show that transgender people often become victims of bullying. For instance, 22 women were murdered in 2015 due to being transgender (Goodyear). Additionally, a report by The National Transgender Discrimination Survey shows that more than 40% of transgender people have attempted suicide because of the lack of acceptance in the society (Grant, Mottet, and Tanis 2). Although unisex bathrooms will not eliminate transphobia, it will be a start to ensuring their acceptance in the future. Matt Zalaznick’s article, “Creating Inclusive Climates”, offers suggestions for how schools can support transgender students and improve school climate by educating classmates and faculty about the needs and experiences of transgender children. The need for such education starts at the elementary school level, with many students beginning to identify as being transgender as early as the age of the average kindergartener. Although the implications of Title IX protections state that schools must not discriminate against students on the basis of sex, many districts have strengthened the wording with amendments to include specific wording to include stronger protections for transgender students. Leaders need to ensure that there are adequate district policies in place to prohibit mistreatment of students based on sexual orientation or gender identity. Nevertheless, what is it that drives these numbers to be so high and how can it be prevented? This is caused by individuals being bullied for being different and becoming the outcast in society. Grossman did an experiment Transgender Youth and Life-Threatening Behaviors this experiment was based off of a four questions (1) what is the history of life-threatening behaviors among transgender youth? (2) Do parental reactions to the youths’ gender nonconformity and transgender identity relate to youths’ life- threatening behaviors? (3) Do youths’ feelings about the appearance of their bodies, or body esteem, relate to life-threatening behavior? (4) What are the differences between the transgender youth who had engaged in life-threatening behaviors? This experiment showed that parents indeed did have a big part in the child’s life. They wanted acceptance from their parents with caused an internal conflict if they individual should keep on going with a lie or what he or she felt they were meant to be. These questions were not easy to answer but showed how this lead to being bullied, harassed, depression that was followed by pill and in some cases suicide. This study showed that almost half of transgender youth though about taking their lives at one point (Grossman, 2007). Also when looking for that person for comfort weather it was a parent or teacher there were less thoughts and actions of suicide compared to the ones who did not have support and were abused emotionally of physically. Seventy-three transgender children who were allowed to express their gender identity freely, forty-nine of their siblings and seventy-three non-transgender children were involved in the study. None of the transgender children had taken hormone, but they lived freely to express their gender identity. The study measured anxiety and depression levels. For depression levels all the numbers were almost all the same. Anxiety levels for all the children varied. Transgender children had higher levels of depression and anxiety than the siblings or non-transgender children, but the variables were only one or two numbers more. Many people are arguing over the transgender bathroom situation, even here in our very own school system, Grace Christian Academy. Some say one should use the restroom of his/her biological identity, while others say one should have the right to use the restroom they gender identify with. Now the issue is starting to arise in public and private school systems, since the law now states every school has to have at least one transgender bathroom available on school property. As a parent with a child in your school system, I would like to express my opinion on this matter with you. Transgender people are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated equally as cisgendered people. Introducing transgender people’s lives to schools and the general population is making the environment more welcoming and tolerant. A New York Times article written on the issue interviewed a principal of a school: “‘I think this gets us closer on a whole variety of fronts to making each and every student in our building feel like a valued, recognized member of our community,’ said Madison West Principal Beth Thompson”(Manjoo). The effect social media has on even a small town demonstrates how much it alters the views of the entire world. This community that has been formed to educate people, specifically transgender people and their family, has expanded because of communication through social media. The issue of gender neutral bathrooms and transgender bathrooms is a hot topic right now in North America. Some people are strongly for it and others are going to great lengths to stop it. The majority of public bathrooms in Canada and The United States of America are gender segregated. Public bathrooms are one of the last places to still be separated by gender. Men and women work with each other, sit next to each other in restaurants, use public pools together, and much more. Recently, there has been an uproar of debates on the topic of gender neutral bathrooms. Most of the debates have had to deal with the LGBTQ+ community trying to use the bathroom they identify with. However, these debates have mainly focused on transgenders, “transgender is a term used to describe people whose gender identity differs from the sex the doctor marked on their birth certificate” (GLADD). There has been several bills that “have been filed in three states to prevent transgender people from using bathrooms consistent with their gender identity” (Tannehill). In order to bring change, the myths of Gender have to be altered. Believing that the world consists of only two genders has been a cultural invention which does not accommodate the vast number of experiences humans are capable of living. According to the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network in 2009, “86% of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students experienced harassment at school; one in three skipped a day of school in the past month because they felt unsafe there” (Colombo 376). Their gender preference is not accommodated in society, and as a result, they are being discriminated, judged, mentally affected and not allowed expression of their social identity.
