Many countries in Asia like China, Japan, UAE, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc., adopted English as a foreign language not as a second language. Because considering English as a second language and as a Foreign Language is different in their view point. They view that outside of the classroom, English is not that much useful. They teach all the subjects in their mother tongue but in India if one is unable to speak in English he becomes a tabooed person. Many Asian countries treat the pupil’s age, sex, race, attitude, intelligence and grasping power in teaching English. Indian teachers neglect this aspect. GRAMMAR – TRANSLATION METHOD It is the ancient method of all methods. It is also known as Classical Method, as it is employed in teaching Classical Languages like Latin and Greek. Linguists opined that this method will be aided in getting knowledge of Classical Languages. It gives a comparative approach. By studying the grammar of target language one can understand the target language much better way. Gattegno opined that language learning will become easy when the student picks language as a baby or child does. It is similar to Chomsky’s Cognitive Approach. Students are initiators and capable of learning language individually. Learning is a process and it should not be taught like normal subjects. Teachers should give only what requires in promoting language learning. Students are actively utilize and explore the new areas of language learning. Sound Color Charts, Word charts, Cuisenaire Rods, and Fidel Charts for beginners are part of this method. Language is introduced in sound specific color.
