Introduction Organisations nowadays due to the financial crisis and the vast technological changes that cause fluid environments, full of dangers and opportunities, need to use all the means at their disposal to cope. On the other hand, globalisation helps companies enter different markets so competition rises (Levitt, 1983). Human capital is a very important asset which can make the difference between success and failure. For that reason HR has been promoted to the role of the strategic partner helping the organisations reach their goals (Khan, 2014). Many that do not evolve, will at some point become disillusioned and will decide to leave leading to a major talent loss for the company. In this literature review two approaches to employee development will assesed, two will be briefly discussed and also a case study of McDonalds will be presented, evaluating the benefits of development for companies and employees. Main Body Training vs Development Training and development are about learning but there are differences between them. Training is the process aimed at imparting information (Business Dictionary, 2017) and transferring capabilities to employees to improve performance on their current jobs (Mathis & Jackson, 2011). Development on the other hand refers to employee learning abilities or expanding existent capabilities that are not needed in their current jobs (Mathis & Jackson, 2011). It is an investment for the future (Ferrazzi, 2015). Leadership, team building and the ability to develop others are some of the common managerial capabilities that people learn. Not to be mistaken everything mentioned builds up towards sales growth and better support for the employees- some of McDonalds business goals. Some of the benefits offered also aim towards employee development, like Educational Assistance, getting tuition reimbursement up to a certain ammount, if grade “C” or higher is achieved (McDonalds, 2017). Conclusion In this literature review we assessed McDonalds development of employees and analysed two out of the four approaches to employee development. Employee development correlates directly to their motivation (Maslow, 1943). Keeping in mind that employee motivation plays an important role on customer retention (Ganesh, 2016) it is vital for organisations to develop their employees for mental reasons and more practical reasons like filling gaps in the current workforce quicker.
