The good news is, as a charismatic leader, there is always opportunities and room for improvements. Charismatic leaders must also have a vision of where the organization is headed. In leadership, practice builds confidence because it provides assurance that an aspiring leader can do what needs to done (Northouse, 2012). However, when put in a leadership position you need all the knowledge you can consume about being an effective leader. The leader should monitor the intellectual, mental and personal characteristics of the workers.
The dynamics of leadership require that one look at more than just the leader. In order to assess leadership one must consider the situation, the leader’s behaviors and the followers; all must be analyzed and the leader must understand how to interact depending on the situation (Northouse, 2010). This means, the leader must deal with situations differently. Because of this, it is possible that a person may be a great leader in one setting or situation and not successful in another. This in itself proves that leadership is not defined by a cookie cutter design of traits.
A leader must know and understand their core values such as, authenticity, passion, service, humor, growth and learning. Successful leaders are genuine and make it safe for followers to speak-up. They make decisions for the common good, communicate expectations, challenge their teams, are accountable, lead by example, reward and provide continuous feedback. I truly believe that successful leadership can be seen through their followers who see and communicate the same vision. Leadership is about being versatile and being flexible enough to be both extroverted and introverted when situation calls for it.
A leader can be defined as a person who influences a group of people, organization, etc. in to achieving a set out or common goal. The aim of this paper is to identify the different approaches to leadership, but there is no single definition of leadership, as it can mean many different things to many people depending of their profession, environment and leadership style (Mielach, 2012). A definition of leadership by Mumford is “the influence of others towards a collective goal” (Mumford, 2010). Some other definitions of leadership include; leadership is a force that leaders posses that causes followers to act and head in the intended direction of the leader (Hogue, 2013).
Some researchers are of the view that there are as many definitions for leadership as there are persons who tried to define this concept. Peter Drucker, a management consultant defines leader as a person who has followers and that leader requires influence in order to gain followers. The leader gain influence of followers through flexible means of training and education as well as support and protection. The leader has such abilities that without destroying the uniqueness of person, he could achieve unity of common values and directions. Building credibility and trust are the foremost characteristics of leadership (Winston & Pattersom, 2006).
Similarly, the situational based organizational leadership theory also puts an important stress on the influence factor of a leader. Situational theory of leadership states in one of its elements that a leader who has gained the respect of his followers will be successful in leading his subordinates because he has a strong influence over them. The leaders are expected to clearly lay down their goals and objectives to their subordinates so that they understand their course of action, and this is one way of ensuring influence over followers. An effective, charismatic leader must lead by example. That leader must be able to know what is going on, the job or task that is being accomplished, and be able to lead the group into performing the task at hand successfully. There are many different types of theories on leadership. There is Fiedler’s contingency theory, situational theories of leadership and House’s path-goal theory. These theories are used to make an individual or manager a more effective leader.
It is important in every leadership role that the leader be as effective as possible in order to work those people he is responsible for to their full potential. Certainly the leadership skill will play an important part in determining the effectiveness of the leader. Good communication skills are another important quality for a leader to have. This means that it is important to be both good at effective speaking as well as listening in order to aim the behaviours and actions of individuals in the required direction. Leadership is the process by which a person exerts influence over other people and inspires, motivates, and directs their activities to help achieve group or organizational goals.
These behavioral traits are essential in being a successful leader. Organizations need leaders that can work with their employees, build team work and be open to new ideas, (Lawler, 2003). In order for progress to be made, employees need to believe in their leader, and in turn, the leader needs to believe in their employees. Trust is obtained through mutual respect, building that bond of commitment to insure organizational success, (Lawler, 2003). The employees will follow a leader that promotes a positive attitude and enjoys expressing their ideas and stories.
