Before I outline the advantages and disadvantages, I wanted to bring you up to speed of the definition of process and outcome measures. Process is how healthcare is provided and how the system works. Outcome is the measure of health status and the difference made in methodology applied. There are some advantages and disadvantages of process and outcome measures of quality care to discuss. Below are some of these advantages, followed by the disadvantages.
An advantage to consider is that most process measures require less risk modification for patient illness than do most outcome measures. When using this process measure, one thing to put into consideration is defining a sample of population that will qualify to receive this process. Once we are able to determine the population that is qualified for this process, further risk adjustment may not be required, but is still useful. Risk adjustment is a helpful tool used to standardize the platform in regarding the reporting of patient outcomes by adjusting for the differences in risks among specific patients (www.sts.org, 2015). What is meant is that process measure provides information in an area that needs improvement and areas that don’t. There are some factors that affect healthcare outcomes that go beyond the provider’s control, and this is a disadvantage.. However, when process measures are developed well so as to reflect the care that the clinician is delivery, the clinician feel answerable to them.
