Prior to assigning this patient, there are critical components of delegation that need to be considered. Utilization of the five key elements of delegation allows the nurse to think critically and professional when assigning this patient to the nurse. The conflict arises when James, the new nurse, expressed his concerns in preparing the patient for surgery. James is feeling an interpersonal conflict between himself and the charge nurse,

Some of the dilemmas that are presented in this case are, the patient is nonverbal, James, the new nurse, has never prepared a patient for a mastectomy surgery thus far in his new career and the charge nurse did not take into consideration when placing a new nurse into an assignment with a patient scheduled for surgery that morning. The charge nurse also does not recognizing James’s discomfort as evidence by stating that the forms are the same for any patient receiving surgery.
