The stress of living in a dorm for many freshmen is great; the transition from living in a comfortable environment, such as a guardian’s home, to living outside of it is very traumatic. It is hard because he or she has always depended on the guardian for a calm stable home life, but there is nothing stable or calm about a dorm. The combination of health problems, the feeling of living in a cell, and dealing with many different individuals makes the experience almost unbearable.
While living on-campus an individual must become accustom to few things. They must remember to always wash their hands after being in or around the bathroom because sickness and disease are rampant in a dormitory. One must also make sure to eat properly and try to lean towards processed food as much as possible. This means that when eating at one of the dining halls try to eat the pre-packaged food and not the food that is supposedly freshly made. Also, one should not take for granted that people practice good hygiene because they don’t. Communal living is very hard on the human body because it is subjected to many new and unusual germs and bacteria’s, therefore a students health is at great risk when living with hundreds of strangers in a strange place.
A student living in a dorm is subject to living in a room slightly larger than a prison cell. Like living in a prison, the bedroom, living room, kitchen, and dining room are all combined to form one living space. The air in the room is stale of years from inadequate ventilation, and musty from the out dated furniture that has had everything spilled on them from water to liquor. Poor florescent lighting in the dorm rooms contribute to irritability, drowsiness, and headaches for many, but above all they do not encourage or stimulate good work habits. There is only one light in the room and only half of the four bulbs work at a time. The feeling of seclusion due to being confined makes a person less apt to excel academically.
The uniting of many different personalities, habits, and social backgrounds can create an unsettling environment for a student. The great differences of opinion that people have towards every aspect of life create many conflicts within the building. People do not realize that if they only would be polite to one another that they could have better relationships.
For me, these are some of the hardest questions to answer, because in my opinion you can’t control someone’s social or emotional behavior in the attempt to facilitate an open learning environment. However, you can provide alternative avenues within the classroom for students to achieve academic success. I refer back to the current Conscious Discipline by Becky Bailey in that for a student to learn they must be open to information or positioned in their “frontal lobe”. When a student is in the defensive/fight flight mode, learning is practically, if not, impossible. Each day at school encountering rudeness is common especially from students but also from the faculty. Walking through the busy hallways of the school is where encountering rudeness is the most likely to occur and probably will. While walking through the busy hallways on my way from the lunchroom keeping a good look out ahead for the blockade of kids that tend to stop right in the middle of the hall to socialize slowing down the flow of the student body is a good idea so I will have less of a hassle in getting around them. Maybe just one of these times the kids will get it through their heads and move to one side or the other to keep the flow of students steady. Yet this does not happen and this will continue on a regular basis during the school day.

Many first year college students face problems as they enter a new educational environment that is very different than that of high school. However, the common problem is that many first year students become stressed. For many students, college is supposed to be the most fun time of their life; however, their fun can be restricted if it is limited by stress and other mental illnesses. According to the National Health Ministries (2006), stress is caused by “greater academic demands,” the feeling of being independent from family, “financial responsibility,” homesickness, being exposed to meeting new people, peer pressure, “awareness of one’s own sexual identity,” and the abuse of drugs and alcohol (p. 2). However, the causes to first year students’ stress mainly include academic demand, parents, finance, and peer pressure.
In my class, we respect ourselves and take care of one another. I will encourage my students to try their personal best in every situation they find themselves in. I will remind students that your personal best effort does not look like your neighbors. I will structure my classroom environment so students can easily collaborate and form positive relationships with one another. The structure of my classroom environment will be full of warmth, patience, and humor creating an environment that is welcoming, safe, and fun for my students. We will look out for another and help one another reach our fullest potential individually, academically, and socially.
Some do choose a healthy lifestyle and along the way college students live out their lives. Unfortunately, there are still a lager amount of college students does choose the unhealthy lifestyle. Reason one, students can be stress and that only way by helping their stress is by smoking some cigarettes. Or reason two, students can have unhealthy family background. For example, if a college students have along day in school and didn’t go as how he/she wanted to and all that student wanted is to come home and relax from a long day, but when that student comes home and there’s so many family problems going on around the house he/she will feel uncomfortable do to family. That does put the college students in a lot of stress. Therefor, college students will choose that path on smoking some cigarettes. College is a life altering experience. It is a place where you leave anything and everything you have ever known, to come to a place where nothing is familiar. The summer before your freshman year of college can be a nerve racking experience. You anxiously wait for the day when the mailman will bring you that envelope that holds your fate. Enclosed in this envelope is the name of your roommate. Your roommate can have the biggest influence on your freshmen year. They can turn into your best friend or your worst enemy. You anticipate the day when you actually get to meet the person you will be living with for the whole year. At Penn State there are no guarantees that you will have anything in common with your roommate at all, and that is a scary thing.

If another student is breaking social rules I must run and tell the teacher immediately, even if I think it is possible to handle my problems myself like an adult, and even if I do not want to get that student in trouble or bother my professors and administrators. If there is a social problem with another student involving emotional intelligence, I must not try and interact with that person because it is the duty of the system and its officials to do that. It is my duty as a student to take these problems to the system and its officials so that a solution may be issued to me, instead of attempting to be the solution itself. I did not mean to cause a disruption to my fellow students while attempting to resolve this issue myself and I sincerely apologize.
The most important rule that I believe in is that my classroom should be a place of learning. The best way to create this type of environment is to make sure that I am consistent with all students and that I make the students feel comfortable and relaxed. I believe that students learn more in a consistent relaxed atmosphere, because all students need to know that what’s wrong for one is wrong for all and what is right for one is right for all. I want my students to be comforted in the feeling that they are all on equal footing when they step into my classroom.
Schedules are a difficult thing to balance. A person must find the time to complete a number of tasks in a day. A normal adult may have time to get everything done and still have time to spare. The normal college student on the other hand is constantly on the go. College students have busy schedules that include working, studying, and socializing.
A new experience, a change from the norm, looking out for myself, and living on my own: for me this is college. The transition of high school student to college seemed immensely overwhelming and even a bit scary. The shift opened a can of worms and created challenges, both good and bad, behind every corner. Due to the change of scene, I am now dealing with the everyday acceptance of the greater world around me: the town, the people and my new life.
