Social media embodies the modern teenage experience; from snapchat to Instagram teenagers today face an onslaught of social expectations. Much like the video clip, teens within the real world confront the same pressures and consequences of social media’s consistent utilization. Privacy and empathy become obsolete inside the realm of text and post. Social media platforms open individuals up to mistreatment, bullying, and an extended period of loneliness. The lack of privacy begs the question of whether or not certain boundaries should be placed upon social media usage, to prevent a repeated cycle of abuse. In the video clip, a teenager grapples between confusion, betrayal, and loneliness. A simple post destroys her friendships and opens her up to unwarranted sexual harassment. The person behind the Instagram post disregards the feelings of those involved; posting out of self-assurance and smug adoration for oneself. A cycle of abuse between the teen and social media can be seen throughout the clip. The cycle of abuse aids in the understanding of toxic relationships, following four stages, which include, tension building, incident, reconciliation, and calm. In the video, the teen does not turn off her phone but instead keeps going from one app to another as tension builds and the main incident with the list occurs. Getting sucked into social media’s steady pull happens to most teenagers, however, not all are strong enough to pull themselves away. Teens become addicted to the inclusion of social media and even after negative situations, much like in the video, still hold onto the hope of acceptance.
