Society tends to trust the internet as a source of reliable information. Despite this sense of trust, few people actually understand the complexity of the internet and computers. Because of this, few people are able to recognize the fraudulent websites that cybercriminals have hidden in the Internet. As a result, society’s naivety is another factor in the increase of identity theft online. Most people do not possess the same knowledge cybercriminals have about computers. Because of this, it makes them easy targets and they are usually unaware of cyberattacks that could be occurring on their devices. Computers are complex machines that are difficult to understand. Cybercriminals, however, are very knowledgeable about computer technology and can have access to people’s personal information. A simple link online is all it takes for a cybercriminal to access a computer. By clicking a link or downloading a seemingly harmless program, malware could invade a computer. A common kind of malware is a keylogger. Keyloggers record a user’s keystrokes on a computer. Every key typed is relayed back to the cybercriminal providing information such as login information, credit card numbers, names, addresses phone numbers and more. Another type of malware is a browser hijacker. Hijackers essentially take over a computer and cause it to redirect a person to websites specified by the cybercriminal. These could be fraudulent websites they have created or websites created by others who are paying to have you redirected to their websites. The main issue with malware and spyware is that they are mainly undetectable. This is the biggest concern about spyware and malware because many people would not even know if their devices are infected. As a result, many people can unknowingly fall victim to identity
