Critical Appraisal: A Qualitative Study

A critical appraisal was completed to assess the value of the research study conducted by Batch & Windsor (2015). This was completed through the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). The CASP tool is used to evaluate different research articles. I assessed that this article has benefit, particularly for the nursing profession. Nevertheless, sections of this article could have been further developed by expanding the topic through a greater variety of hospital settings and more diverse patient populations (add more). The findings in the article by Batch & Windsor (2014) are explicitly explained. The original research question was answered in the key findings of the study. The research question was related to assessing how casualization in the nursing profession and communication were impacted. The findings discussed that casual or part time staff is used there is breakdowns in communication and overall impacts the quality of care. An important consideration of note is that this study did describe how the researcher read over the data numerous times to determine themes and meanings. The potential disadvantages of the proceduralist or the CASP approach is that using a specific tool and set of guidelines for every research article may not consistently be applicable. It may be difficult to categorize an article as not having any merit if does not pass the screening questions. It may preclude articles that have value and the ability to depict different topics well since they are not in accordance with the CASP tool. The merits of the substantive approach include concentrating on the analytical rather than the research process. It looks beyond the research process used or the researcher’s assessment of validity with regards to the conclusions of the study. There is emphasis on the dissemination of the findings rather than assessing if the research process was problematic.
