Counseling Experience and Reaction Paper
Have you ever been in a counseling session that involved discussing your problems? My first experience of a counseling session was this semester at the BOX clinic on campus. It was a tough experience because I felt that I was being forced to participate. The building rapport skills, session activities, communication/listening skills, and self awareness aspects all played apart in this experience.
First, the building rapport skills were started at the intake session. I was introduced to my counselor for the next five weeks and I was not aware of what to expect next. I told him where I was from, my current major, and what is my career goal. He did not disclose much about himself other than he was a college student as well. I often blamed how the world being set up as to why I could not enjoy life. By being a client, I realized the problem was within myself. Regardless of the problem I was going through, I had every right to simply ignore it or fix it. For example, I was stressed out from school and work. My counselor helped me realize that I do deserve a break. On spring break, I went on vacation with my family. While on vacation, I went to the beach and listened to the waves . The waves calmed me just like the stress management exercise I completed in my counseling session. Also, I discussed with my counselor about my issue of overeating whenever I am stressed out. By overeating, I felt that food was a way for me to forget about my problems, but it was really just making everything worse. From listening to the feedback from my counselor, I realized that I should stop using food as a calming tool. As a client, it is awesome to understand why you are experiencing certain problems within your life. By having a great counselor, I was able to think of solutions to my problems without creating more
