Although I was able to reflect what clients are experiencing, I believe that more reflections of clients’ feelings are needed during sessions. Reflective listening shows clients that the counselors are listening to them, and it also helps the counselors to keep the conversation with clients going. Other than that, as we reflect client’s experiencing, clients can help counselors to clarify any confusions. What is a counseling technique? The technique is used for Therapeutic counselor for many different ways to reach the client through counseling. However, when counselors become very familiar with a certain type of therapeutic technique, the counselor begins finding their comfort in the technique if it’s successful. Their theoretical approach is important for how it informs the way a counselor works. The importance of counseling comes from the time and effort that is put into it by the counselor giving attention to the client, and the client pouring out the problems that is occurring in their life.
These theories are usually hosen based on the client needs and what the counselor feel will be most effective. Counselors are not limited to just one theory when it comes to treating their clients. Theories can be used in conjunction with one another to effectively treat clients. Counseling does not just involve theories alone, it in involves some amount of talking with the person. The talking should be aimed at helping the person solve the problem(s), improve outlook, and/or aid in the client changing their behavior(s) (Woods, 2005).
During therapy, there is a continuous dialogue between the client and the therapist, in which the therapist shows warmth and acceptance (Jones-Smith, 2012). Gestalt therapy has an existential/ humanistic approach that was developed by Fredrick and Laura Fritz (Fiebert, 2011). One of the major concepts of Gestalt therapy is that individual having awareness of themselves and their environment. Usually people seeking therapy have conflicts with self-awareness and an unfinished business. One way that therapists help clients is by helping them form new figure-ground relationships in order for the individual to be aware of their self and their environment, and live in the present moment with awareness (Jones-Smith, 2012).
Useful to Know Instillation of hope is useful to know for several reasons number one is hope to help patients still in therapy to reach their goals. Faith to believe that the treatment is working well for the patient. Also, other members in the instillation of hope observe their fellow members that are improving. It is also useful to know that the instillation of hope encourages the therapist to believe in themselves when counseling a group. The corrective emotional experience to me is useful in group work because the therapist uses the concept of the here-and-now method.
The counselor assesses continually the relationship between what is going on in the client’s life, in the session. An effective counselor can help pinpoint the obstacles in client life. Counselors are expected to develop a professional relationship with their clients as clients will share deeply personal and meaningful material with the counselor. Regardless of the setting, the counselor and client develop a powerful relationship to facilitate change. Professional counselors put forth diligent effort to enter this profession, and we recognize that there are some unique dimensions of being a professional counselor that are directly related to effectiveness and the counseling environment.
The counselor’s objective is to identify the problem of the client and plan out the method of helping the client overcome the problem. The most rewarding part of being a counselor is the ability to make a difference in people’s lives. In private practice, there is a constant push to become more skilled at helping so that clients will refer others to you for help. It is also important to follow up with the client about their well-being even after treatment has ended to ensure that they are still living a healthy and stress-free life. The client must make time for all scheduled sessions with the counselor for best results of treatment.
Interpersonal communication skills are an important asset in most professions, but are considered to be especially vital in the profession of psychology. Anderson, Ogles, Patterson, Lambert, & Vermeersch (2009) report that the quality of a therapist’s interpersonal skills is an important factor to be considered when predicting the outcome of psychotherapy. Empathic communication can have a significant effect on building rapport, and on the overall client-therapist relationship. Paraphrasing can be used to facilitate deeper understanding, and can also have an impact on the outcome of therapy. This essay will discuss some of the literature assessing the importance of these two skills, and will include a reflection on the way they are used in the attached video.
Jacobs et al., advises that “More and more clients are becoming aware that therapists have ethical standards by which they should abide; thus, an increasing number of clients are challenging the ethical behavior of professional helpers” (Jacobs p. 28). Many clients are well educated on the process, or have sufficient experience in group therapy that a helper with no or little experience can be seen with very little effort. The America Counseling Association (2004) have their members bind on codes of ethics that can help their success if followed, “Counselors practice in specialty areas new to them only after appropriate education, training, and supervised experience” (c.2.b.).
