How far is to far? Is corporal punishment wrong or do people just take things too far? Corporal punishment is legal in all 50 states and is used by about half of the families across the United States (Nicks). Parents use household items such as wooden spoons, spatulas and most commonly a belt. Results show that children who received corporal punishment behaved for short-term, but long-term it caused several issues. Some of the issues that it revealed were psychological disorders, anger issues and it was even linked to criminality (Samakow). The definition of corporal punishment is: a punishment intended to cause physical pain on a person, the most common method is spanking. Our society needs to realize and understand the boundaries of corporal punishment and realize when it is being taken too far. People believe that the definition of abuse is very black and white. It is sometimes rather confusing. What is too far? What is too much? Is it okay to spank? These are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this topic. We no longer live in a world where everybody is “spanked” or even punished at all. There are people that believe corporal punishment is absolutely out of the question. “ 'You don't hit a child for any reason! Spanking is hitting,’ said Peter Dempsey, on Facebook” (Parikh). Americans acceptance of corporal punishment has decreased a great bit since the 1960s. With that being said, still two thirds of Americans believe that corporal punishment is acceptable.
