Community College vs. Universities There will come a time at the end of the school year seniors have to decide whether to go to college or not. If they decide to go then there’s the question, “Should it be community college or a university?” Even though universities and community college both basically serve the same purpose, they are different because of the learning environment, admissions/finances, and convenience. When a senior chooses to attend a university or a community college, the learning environment is something that should be considered in the decision making. Because the costs are often lower and admission is more open at two year colleges, many kids begin their college careers in a community college. If one plans to start at a community or junior college and later transfer to a four-year college, they should make sure that their community college courses will transfer to the colleges that they are interested in. They also need to make sure that their courses will count toward their bachelor’s degree. Many community colleges have super clear agreements with four-year colleges under which the course work taken at the community college transfers into the four-year degree program. Sometimes students can’t afford the high cost of a university but on the other hand, community college offers comparable freshman and sophomore level general education class that are a fraction of the per credit cost of a lot of 4 year institutions. For many people, money is the main reason for not going to a university. Being that people do not want to go into debt, students usually choose community college.
