Most people would agree that segregation/racism was and still is an issue in the United States. Both of the cases I will be telling you about issues with the13th and 14th amendments. Two specific cases that are very relevant to what I am talking about are, Homer Plessy vs Fuerguson and Brown vs Board of education. Both of these cases related to each other because the cases had changed the precedent of the other, and the other case changed African American history.

The Plessy v. Ferguson case took place on May 18, 1896 when a man named Homer Plessy sat in the "white" section in one of the cars on a train. The judge at this time was John Howard Ferguson. He had previously declared the separate cars were "unconstitutional on trains …show more content…

That and the desegregation period was the idea behind the case. It was the first challenge of the "separate but equal" ruling had been challenged. The thirteen parents were backed up by many African American community leaders, the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and the NAACP's lawyer Thurgood Marshall. However, against them were pretty much the whole south, many elected officials of Congress, and the Governor of Alabama. So with the ruling of this case was that Eight years after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, in the 1954 case of brown v board of education of Topeka, he penned this cartoon expressing his dismay at the country's slow progress toward education equality. The brown family believed that this case violated the 14th amendment. The amendment states that "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, citizens of the United States." So therefor all black citizens and people are entitled to the same rights as everyone else.

The information I have explained both cases Plessy v Ferguson and Brown v The board of education, have similar arguments and both related to the issues with segregation. The 14th and 13th amendments were very relevant in these cases because all citizens of the United States are citizens and are treated like citizens. Both of these cases were very important to American history. The difference in these case were that Plessys case was shut down and was not the brown case was considered
