The foundation of Community- Oriented Nursing Practice has three aspects of healthcare working together. That is population health, community health, public health, and can provide a framework to grasp the basics of the system. Population health shows outcomes of care the health of a population. This became a focus because of the affordable care act. Populations are defined in many ways. They can be a community, age, illnesses, geographic location, patient, income levels or any other organized group to be addressed. Community health is the everyday health. This is where one examines the health characteristics of populations. Social determinants such as wealth, sanitation, safety, and nutrition are applicable here. The scientific method was being employed and developed providing a foundation for the Evidence-Based Practice used in healthcare today. Gathering evidence and relationships of practice to health, he dispelled the belief that cholera was spread through the air. He thought the organism spread through water and reproduce in the human body. Specifically, once identifying the locations of outbreaks, the sources of water, the relationship to of the cases to the water source were noted. Around the same time, Lillian Ward became the first public health nurse. As is the foundation of this type of nursing, she helped to improve the economic, Nutritional, and sanitation levels through teaching and prevention. Many could not pay for services. To meet the needs and improve the living conditions of the immigrant population in a Manhattan, New York City neighborhood, she provided care through an office until 1895. In that year she opened The Henry Street Settlement to meet the growing demands for social services and healthcare (Petiprin, 2016). In this last century and current history, The Social Security Act came in 1935. It funded public health nursing. 1965 the United States Surgeon General declared smoking tobacco a health hazard. The IOM was formed in 1988 to provide leadership in Health Care. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 expands access to health insurance, protect patients against arbitrary actions by insurance companies, and reduce costs. The influences on healthcare are vast. Ultimately, history has brought the government, community, and individual together to address (interventions) disease prevention, promote and protect health maintenance, restoration, and surveillance.
